Hey guys,

Just got the game from the MacGamestore and I am unable to use any of the f-keys. So I can't save the game, so I end up having to start from scratch.

I went to the Feral site and they suggest changing the settings for the keyboard in the System Preferences: notihing, nada, ziltch.

For some reason, when playing, my cursor will only go to the lower edge of the menu bar and stop. It will not allow me to select any of the menu bar.

I am running a :
Mac Pro mid 2012
Processor  3.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Memory  8 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC
Graphics  ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Odd. What happens when you press "ESC" key to bring up the menu to save/load?

Also, have you tried cmd-tabbing out to Finder, and then back into the game? That sometimes clears up lots of cursor issues in all kinds of games.

Bobbyz123, I have basically the same system as you only with the 5870 card.  Is there an XCOM demo I could test out?  Basically what I'd do is to mess with my mouse and keyboard to get it working, some games just don't let you command tab to other apps so you are stuck looking at mouse and keyboard driver issues, which would be a good place to look as you have a mouse problem that a reboot doesn't fix.  Try hot swapping your mouse and then your mouse and keyboard while the game is running.  Just unplug them and plug them back in.  Sometimes that's needed to force the game and OS to detect and launch the drivers.  If this still doesn't work then ask here for some alternate mouse driver software, a demo of a product will do.  See if swapping drivers fixes the problem.

This is a Feral game, you shouldn't be having problems as your modern system is one used in testing.  This leads me to speculate on something you may have done to your setup, study your system mouse and keyboard options.  Also, make sure you give all of the game options a very thorough going over.  Mess with anything mouse or keyboard related.

XCOM. Its XCOM. Get it right! Say XCOM, and not the other thing that is not XCOM. I have such fixed the topic title so that it reads XCOM.

Hey BattleCat,

Thanks for the feedback. I never knew about the cmd-tab trick. It works. Pretty cool!

I think that you might be on to something. It doesn't make a lot of sense to think that the problem is application relataed. After all, there are plenty of Mac users enjoying the game with more elaborate set-ups than mine. I am working with Feral to resolve this issue and I got this reply yesterday:

"Thank you for sending your support report.  We are unable to find anything immediately apparent that would explain the issues you are describing.

I am going to suggest that you first set your game to play in full-screen.  Please open the game to its pre-game Options window.
If you are not seeing the pre-game options window, please hold the Command (⌘) key when launching the game.
Under the Video tab, please uncheck Run in a window.

I might also suggest that the input/control anomalies you are seeing may be caused by some conflicting set of preferences having been set.

Please delete the Preferences Data file in order to reset the preferences. This can be found via the Open Preferences Folder button on the About tab of the pre-game options window.

**Please be sure to only delete the Preferences Data file and not the entire folder as this will also delete your saved games**

Once the Preferences Data file is deleted, please launch the game again and let us know if you find the issue resolved."

Well I gave it a shot.

Unfortunately, the situation hasn't changed.

It dosen't help that the game looks so awesome!

GOT IT!

I got this advice from Feral:

- Go To System Preferences->Users & Groups
- Click the lock in the bottom left corner and enter your password
- Click the + sign above the lock
- Add a new user account - ensure that it is set up to be an Administrator
- Now, log out of your normal account and into the new one
- Launch the game on the new account

   ...and it worked!

Hopefully, this will help anybody who is having similar problems.

It's due to your account being broken / cruft somewhere in your OS settings (User Library) being an admin is helpful but is unlikely the reason. It's amazing what unexpected rubbish and crazy side effects are caused by something weird in the Users Library folder.

Especially when crazy developers write preferences, app support, or saved games to places like "~/" "/Library" "~/Movies" "/Users/Shared/Library/Fonts" ...

Makes me wonder why some of them are even programming on a mac ;)

Well Apple are now very strict with their enforce sandboxing which helps in some way but I find it the keyboard/mouse driver software that is usually to blame. We have seen a random crashes caused by drivers from I think every mouse/keyboard software at one point or another. Thing is users always blame the game not the $%$% drivers as it is the game that gets taken out.

Good thing is we usually harden our code again most of it but sometimes a doozy of a third party bug can catch you out. I also find migrating users to a new Mac or OS often has some unexpected side effects.
