The plot thickens... and we thought they'd skip over it.

Tropico 5 will apparently in fact be multiplatform (Windows, Mac & Linux) right from the beginning.

Yeah, that's how it's always been announced.... as being simultaneous for those.

Not quite. They announced it simultaneously for Windows, Mac and Linux, but never announced a simultaneous release. DXHRDC also got announced for Windows and Mac in the same press release, but the Mac version is still not released.

Fine, If you are going to use that kind of reasoning then having the logos on the Steam DB page isn't a guarantee that they'll be released simultaneous either. Painkiler HD at one time was listed as Steamplay but the Mac version has yet to materialize.

Kalypso's announcements seemed to imply a simultanious release however.

That's why I wrote "apparently".

Funny that you mention that, because that game sports an "Install" button now for me under OS X. Haven't tried it yet, though.

Does it now? I haven't seen any kind of announcement for that so that's news to me. That's interesting.

OK I tried installing it and it doesn't even download..  The only thing that downloads is the application icon. The application folder is empty and validating the cache gives a false positive. Meaning it says the files are all valid yet there are none.

I also haven't found any forum page talking about the Mac version of Painkiller HD being out or anyone playing it. Also the Steam page only lists Windows and Linux.

Then it's probably just not quite there yet. The same thing ("Install" button active, but no actual download) happened before for other games where the launch of the Mac version was imminent. I guess the Mac port will then be available within the next few days, maybe a week.

Recently the developers said they were going to "try and get the Mac version out in the 1st half of the year". I thought porting Unity games to other platforms was a simple process? Anyways maybe their timetable has changed...

Painkiller HD could be in beta and needs a beta activation code to enable. Kinda surprised that they would enable it in the list for everyone if so though.

To get a publishable version, it still takes a bit more work than just clicking the "Mac" checkbox. The game still has to be tested, etc. Other than that, it's possible that the hold-up has less to do with the game itself, but with additional middleware, in the specific case Uplay. The Windows version uses it and maybe Ubi wants to get some kind of Mac version first.

I messaged them about this. They were very clear during early access that if you purchased early access you would get the Mac version that was supposed to be available at launch. So like a big dumby head I did it, wanting to support a game I wanted on the Mac. Then when I messaged asking where the Mac Version was it was uhhh uuhhhh we are optimizing and we have no ETA. Fool me once Ubi, there won't be a second time. I won't do you any more financial favors. At least it looks like it won't end up like Torchlight II and will actually see a Mac version.

Yeah just like porting a Unreal game to other platforms is a simple process. The truth can be a little different depending on how you use the engine, customise it etc.  Also if it is a new platform you need to buy hardware, get setup on the p;platform, organise or hire QA.

From experience I can tell you tooling up for a new platform isn't simple :)
