In response to a query from Kotaku, Runic Games has offered a statement about the delayed release of a Mac version of Torchlight II. Citing "unexpected complexities" Runic could offer no definite release date for the Mac version or any specific details about it. In addition to a variety of monster types to slay and items to gather Torchlight II will introduce cooperative multiplayer action, a new user interface, and random dungeons.

The official word as of right now is that we encountered unexpected complexities in porting Torchlight 2 to the Mac, simultaneous with our scramble to ramp up on our next project and get it moving forward. The Mac platform still poses some challenges for us as a company (as anyone who waited for the Mac port of Torchlight 1 can attest). As a result, while we are still pursuing it, we don't have a date or any real details to share on the Mac port of Torchlight 2 just yet. When we do have something to share, though, we'll do so as quickly as possible.

Well, at least some official word – even if it's just "we don't know when..." :(

If it's a technical issue, they should ask for outside help... if all the machines with the source code and the onside and offside backups where fireballed by a drunk imp, then this makes sense however.

Perhaps they've taken up Gabe Newell's torch.  So to speak.

And on monday even. They know they really blundered this one. :P

I'll wait until it hits 5$, and then snag it up. I expect it to be quite buggy at release, given TL1, and how they have announced the seuqel.

I never got through the second. I got disinterested as the game was uninspired and just more of the first game pretty much. Repetitive, fruity colored, boring.

I got a bit bored by the time I finished the first Torchlight.  One of those games that I was glad I played but also glad it was over.

Exactly how I felt. I had a lot of hopes for it, but in the end it just didn't live up to the hype. I guess I didn't really go for the over-much WOW style.

Well, it is a quite faithful Diablo clone, even if more cartoony in the graphics department. This type of games isn't necessarily known for their diverse gameplay. When I recently played through Diablo 3 on the PS3, I found myself to blank out now and then, and play almost on autopilot.

probably not that complex, really:
1. No one there owns a Mac
2. They milked the PC release as long as they could but after two years their revenue stream has dried up
3. Port it to the Mac!

They were working on the port years ago. This wasn't a recent decision. My guess is that they ran into problems with whoever they hired to do the port (TL1 was contracted out, I believe.) Maybe lawyers were involved, somehow. (Hence the silence and time.) Either that or they tried to do it themselves from the beginning and realized they didn't know what they were doing...

From the vague information they gave us, I gathered that they actually tried to port the game themselves first, but then handed it to a third party at some point, which had to start from scratch again.

We've actually gotten some correspondence from some developers at times... of the like "we dont have any macs around here so we cant really test the builds we give you to publish".
