I remember hearing at one time that DivX causes some graphical glitches in various games.  Is this still true or have those bugs been worked out of DivX?  Why I ask is that I'm trying to watch an old John Wayne movie "The Unconquered" on Veehd.com and it requires this plugin for Safari.

Should I shine this on or give it a shot?  How difficult is it to uninstall DivX?

I haven't actually bothered with the dedicated DivX plugin for years. Perian fulfills almost all of my video format needs and mostly works without any interference.

Yeah, I don't even know whether I have the DivX codecs on my computer, and all the videos work; courtesy of Perian.

Problem is only that Perian is not being developed anymore..

Well, if tBC is not using ML then he should definitely get Perian. If he is using ML, then probably get it anyway, as it appears that is the only thing out there with inbuilt support for QT while others are merely other video players or converters.

Oh, I didn't knew that. But apparently they released the source code as open source, so there might be some hope that someone else picks it up.

Yep, it's been abandoned for some time unfortunately. :(

But, it still works. Thus, on a day to day basis, I care not and am running it without issue on the top three computers in the sig.

I didn't realise DivX as such even existed any more; pretty much everything seems to use XviD. Theoretically the content should be compatible with any MPEG-4 Part 2 ASP decoder implementation.

... people actually use Quicktime?

Color me shocked.  Given how stunted and nearly useless QT has been since it became Quicktime X, i thought most people here would have long since abandoned it.

I just use VLC for videos of any stripe.  Takes less memory, has built in support for every format under the sun, and has tons of options under the hood if you need to tinker.

Yes I have VLC too, but the site I'm visiting is requesting a plugin for DivX and apparently having VLC on my system doesn't satisfy it.

Wow, i dont think i've encountered a website that wanted DivX in forever.  FWIW, i never had it interfere with any games.  And Perian should do that job anyway - i use it on my Media Center Mini and it takes care of any plugin nonsense like that.

I think that the makers of DivX did not want angry-sociopathic-felines to use their software. Either that or you could try Perian...

It taught me that the only way I will be happy is by standing on the pile of bodies of my so-called back stabbing, gossipy "friends".

By the way, I've installed Perian and it did not solve the plug-in problem of Veehd.  Ah well, thanks for the help, I'm abandoning that website.

Perian developers probably safeguarded their software from old-cranky-sociopathic-felines as well. Hmm... why not just go back to the litter box and figure something out? Is that not where many a kitty does his or her best thinking?
