Obsidian Entertainment's Project Eternity Kickstarter successfully concluded with a final tally of $3,986,929, making it the highest funded video game Kickstarter campaign thus far. Drawing on classics of the genre such as Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, and Planescape: Torment, the game will feature character creation, a party of adventurers, tactical "real time with pause" combat, dungeon exploration, and a storyline the developers promise will be compelling.

THANK YOU AND TO NEW BEGINNINGS...
Unfortunately this couldn't last for an Eternity, but it was an absolutely incredible run. A profound thanks to all of you - our backers here on Kickstarter and on PayPal, all of our old and new friends from the comments section and our forums, and of course, the Obsidian Order!

...Plus the 150.000something $ that was donated by PayPal.

And now, time for some Legend of Zelda.

I cry “concept graphic” on that “screenshot.” If they're still raising funding when have they had time and money to develop an engine capable of making that screenshot?

edit: still, i would like to have that game. Strange that they haven't truly committed to the Mac though with the statement, "looking for a DRM-free distributor" or some such. Couldn't they just use the Mac App Store or something on the order of Mac Game Store?

They are using Unity, so the engine is already complete and native.  The screenshot is detailed, but since it looks like it will be a layered orthographic composite like BG2, they can render in as much environmental detail as they want.  It's the perfect approach for this kind of game.  I wish they would hire me so I could be a part of it!

The background graphics are pre-rendered, so the graphics capabilities of whatever engine they use (Unity, as mentioned) are of relatively minor importance.

I don't see why you think Baldurs Gate kind of games could happen, while this can't even though it uses the exact same approach, except with a few 3D models added.

The App Store is not DRM free by far.

They are absolutely and fully committed to the Mac. The game will be available through Steam (not quite what I — or Obsidian themselves — would call "DRM-free") and most likely through GOG.com (they have some big announcements today and one apparently will be Mac support).

They're using Unity.  A native Mac version is literally as easy as selecting "OS X" from a pop-up list.  (And doing some testing just to make sure they didn't do something silly like hard-code Windows paths in whatever file IO code they write.)
