Electronic Arts's upcoming SimCity Limited Edition is now available for pre-order. Scheduled for an early 2013 release, development of the latest incarnation of the popular city building sim is being led by Maxis. SimCity Mac will once again give players the chance to construct and manage a thriving city. The Limited Edition will feature new characters, crime waves, a super hero HQ, and an evil villain lair.

Good luck with that (obnoxious DRM).

EA is another one of those 'over sized big heartless corporations that have incorporated a completely retarded DRM system that only hurts legit owners all in the name of fighting piracy that will still happen no matter what they do?'

Crap. Guess they are vying for #1 retard against Ubisoft.

Last I read Ubisoft is doing away with its retarded DRM. Maybe not in all cases, but in some form anyway. Will have to re-read to get all the details.

Interesting. Maybe the slew of forum posts, tech support, emails, bad reviews finally sunk in?

Any news from Mac Origin beta testers any place? Although I'm sure they're under a NDA...

They are, but they've only removed the DRM from the PC versions. Macs still have it, at least with Brotherhood and Splinter Cell: Conviction.

Read this great Rock Paper Shotgun interview.

It's kind of hilarious/sad how they weasel out of the questions. But props to RPS on being persistent.

Regarding SimCity's DRM...as long as the game does interesting things with the internet to make it a better game, and it's not simply an authentication check, I don't mind. I always have SP games to fall back on in the rare instance my internet goes down. And the region-based gameplay sounds pretty damn cool.

I'm more concerned with Origin, and how it'll work on the Mac. WIll the Origin app have to be running? If so, that is much more bothersome to me. Hopefully, though, you'll be able to run it once to install the game and then forget about it.

Edit: By the way, does anyone know if we *must* specifically purchase the mac version, or will Origin give us the Mac and PC version like steam? It would be nice if I had the PC version to fall back on if the cider port is garbage.

Knowing EA, they want as much money as possible, so I would not be surprised if you have to buy each version separately =p

Well, in the past, their cider games (Spore, The Sims 3) have been hybrid.

Yeah, those were Hybrid, but they never really made it clear to the average consumer. They make boxes and details like 'this is the mac version' and 'that is the pc version', suckering people into buying both, when its actually the same game on the platform branded products ;) Marketing ploy heh.

(wait, Spore was hybrid??? ... hmm)
