MinMax Games' Space Pirates and Zombies is now available for purchase at Mac Game Store. The action oriented top down space combat game challenges players to fight zombie infestations across the stars and features 33 ships, 70 unique components, and a physics based combat system.

At its core, Space Pirates and Zombies is an action based, skill oriented, top down space combat game. It's similar to the ones we knew and loved in years past, but now using full physics simulation and modern graphics for those oh so pretty explosions. But as you dig deeper, SPAZ becomes much more.

Instead of flying a single ship, you are in charge of an ever growing and evolving fleet, unlocking the rich tactical elements of SPAZ, all accessed at the touch of a button. Issue orders, change ships, apply fleet AI settings, all on the fly. At any moment the battle can change, and the Tactics Panel gives you the tools to make the battle turn in your favor.

As a layer on top of the action and tactics, we have a detailed technology and levelup system akin to what you would expect from an RPG. Learn to build new ships by destroying your enemies. Explore the galaxy to find components, use your hard earned research points to unlock their potential, and then customize every aspect of your new fleet.

Finally, there is the universe in which all this strife and adventure takes place. SPAZ features a persistent randomly generated Galaxy populated with story elements, factions, enemies, missions, items, to provide you with a unique experience each time you play. While you are struggling to survive, uncover the secret of an ever expanding Zombie infestation that spreads by establishing its own real time multi-tiered ecosystem.

You can also buy this game for $pay-what-you-want as part of the Humble Indie Bundle 6, which is running for the next few weeks. (Being a Humble Bundle, you of course get Mac and Linux versions of everything.)

Finally got a couple hours to try out this game. It's really good, though I wonder if they've added some unnecessary complexity to it. They've made it pretty easy to manage multiple ships as well ship  upgrades, AI tactics, missions, factions, and so on. There are a ton of ways to upgrade ships yet it's completely manageable. But when the in-game help system suddenly introduced Specialists to me out of the blue my eyes started to glaze over. And who knows what other complexities are on deck.. :-)

Really well done though. I wasn't intending to play it very long (personal time constraints) but now I'm hankering to earn myself a larger ship. So I'm planning to give it a few more play sessions.

Anyone else playing this? A day or two after my last post I got fed up with it and stopped playing. I'm still in the early parts of the game, but I'm lacking any sense of progress in my combat abilities. The simplest dogfights still take forever, and I sometimes have to resort to spamming ships until I've worn down the enemy. When I'm attacking a faction that's currently friendly to me I have to fire at them for 5 minutes before I've done enough damage to make them annoyed enough to even fire back.

In short, I feel like I'm missing something. Is there a way to make combat more decisive? If my ships are level 3 and I'm in a sector with level 1 ships I feel like I shouldn't be having such problems. Do my tactics stink? Should I be trading goons for tech? Did I spend my upgrade points unwisely?

Make no mistake, it's all very well done and I still recommend people try it for themselves, but I think I've fallen below the game's intended upgrade curve somehow and there's nothing in-game to tell me where I went wrong.
