Rage is available on sale for $22 on the App store.  Great !  I thought, I will go ahead and get it.  I have read in this forum that you can get it to run under 10.6.x.

one little catch - when I try and buy it, it checks my system and since I am not running 10.7.x I cant even buy it.  Is there any way to fool the App store ?

It's also on sale for $22 in the Mac Game Store. Aspyr is likewise selling RAGE directly for the same price.

Bought my copy at the Mac Game Store upon release. ;)

BTW, John Carmack had some kind words for the Mac in his latest keynote..

Quote

The Mac still remains a viable platform for us. The Mac has never required any charity from id.. all of those ports have carried their own weight there.. they've been viable business platforms. I actually think the Mac is going to become a little more important for us."

then a bit later

Quote

Linux is an issue that's taken a lot more currency with Valve announcing Steam for Linux and that does change factors a bit but we have made two forays into the Linux commercial market most recently with the Quake Live client and that platform just hasn't carried its weight compared to the Mac there. It's great that people are entusiastic about it but there's just not as many people that are interested in paying for a game on the platform and that just seems to be the reality."

Unfortunately I can't even play it now... framerate is now awesome, but the textures start going crazy and the game freezes up altogether after a few minutes of play, necessitating a force quit. And not just any force quit, one I have to hold for about 30 seconds before it can do it.

Looked at Aspyr's site and it seems it may be something to do with the nVidia drivers.

I personally haven't tried Rage under ML yet, but I just read an article in a German Mac magazine (originally about Retina enabled games) where they described that they also had severe problems with the game, including crashes and problems with the textures. Seems that Aspyr has to put some work in that game...

I contacted Aspyr and their explanation was my GPU is unsupported. So I guess it was random chance it ran successfully for me under Lion. Now, no more, and they're not gonna fix that. Which they really should considering the framerate was MORE than acceptable (usually >40 fps unless in huge areas... 8600M is totally capable of running it)

Frak. No Mac RAGE until the 2013 Mac Pros I guess.

Seems Rage runs great on the 8600M under Windows. Fortunately I have a cheaply-gotten copy of Windows 7 Ultimate inbound, so I guess I can play the PC version...

Damnit Aspyr! ADD SUPPORT FOR MY GPU! I don't want to reboot under Windows to play a game that has a Mac version!
