So I wanted to get Minecraft....I did all the sucky little "classic" versions and whatnot.......but I clicked download on the main Minecraft page, and it downloaded the Minecraft installer, which is normal. When opened and logged into, it says ACCOUNT NOT PREMIUM, which is normal. However my cousin did the same (who is on a Windows) and the same thing happened, but for him there is this little button that says, Play Offline, which is shaded out, and cannot be clicked on. For ME, I can click on it, and it takes me to - MINECRAFT 1.1! Which I might add, I paid nothing for. 1.1 is at least 6 months outdated so I'm not considering this "stealing" or "hacking" or getting rid of it (because I've tried, and I can still re-download it, and it still works). Now I ask you - is there a trick to getting this? Is it Mac only, and is that why my cousin can't get it? Or was it a website bug at the moment I downloaded it? There seems to be no way to update it either, and it seems as though I can't do multiplayer. Please tell me - you other Mac users - please register and download the launcher and tell me what happens for you, I'm slightly confused, and would also like to play multiplayer.

And now, time for some Legend of Zelda.

what I think happened was because you played the classic version you already had the files downloaded, so when you clicked play offline it just updated the files to be 1.1, but you will never be able to play multiplayer without a payed account.

I'll stand corrected but Minecraft has always had some kind of free version(s) available.
For full-on multiplayer with the latest version you *should* have to pay. If it were the latest build you were playing for free, with others online, then that would definitely be a stuff-up at their end.
With the freebies available, there might be differences between what is available across Mac/Windows/Linux platforms. Largely because I suspect that no-one really cares too much.
By the way, for anyone wondering, a recent model iMac with maxed memory is more than enough to run Minecraft AND to also have it function as a server for others to play. It is a massive memory hog and you must have a minimum upload speed of 1mbps and a stable IP address or some way that people can find out your current IP address. Otherwise just forget it.
