Well, I think I already mentioned elsewhere that I'm not that fond of the Elder Scrolls games (at least the more recent ones I played), but I nevertheless think it's noteworthy that an MMO spinoff has been revealed. Wondering why I posted this in "Mac Adventures, RPG and MMOs"? Take a guess...

Uhh I never expected to see this franchise on the Mac - in any form - so this is really surprising. But I'm mystified that this is what they finally decide to test the Mac market with. Or does Bethesda have absolutely nothing to do with this?

There isn't much difference between Zenimax (who made the announcement) and Bethesda.

makes more sense if they want it to be huge and take on WoW.  No one will be able to take on WoW without Mac support.

Maybe the takeover of id has paid off after-all in a newfound acceptance of Mac and/or sales of Mac RAGE turned out well.

I wonder what engine they are planning on using? Using Skyrim's engine would indicate a higher level of graphics than most MMOs target and opens the door to Mac support for Skyrim and other future non-MMO Elder Scroll games. (Will there be anymore non-MMO Elder Scroll games?) Will they be using Cider?

I've been playing Skyrim on my iMac through Cider pretty much just after it came out. (flawlessly without a hitch or bug.) You can probably also play through Wineskin but i haven't tried. As recent events have shown, native games aren't always better. I'm pretty sure you can play ever other ES game through Cider or Wine as well.

Zenimax owns Bethesda and publishes stuff. Given Bethesda is the one who makes the games I'd say there's a significant difference.

That would only be true if Bioware's heads Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk would have founded EA and one of them would be EA's CEO...

This all makes sense now, i wonder how long it's been in development for. It's as if they've had a slow plan to create some real hype around the series and then finally introduce a real money making model to showcase a new adventure

For who's interested: a new trailer (showing no gameplay again) and and interview video with actually in-game graphics.

ZeniMax Media is a holding company that owns a number of studios.

ZeniMax Online Studios is the company developing the MMO, Bethesda is not.

Bethesda Softworks is the publishing branch of  ZeniMax Media  and does publishing and distribution for all brands.

Bethesda Game Studio is the branch that Develops the actual games, SkyRim,  Fallout etc.

The engine is a internally developed cross platform MMO engine / Tool set, It is not the same as the Bethesda Engine.

The Mac port is a proper port, not w Wine wrapper or emulation library.

They used it for prototyping.

Because years back...

Hero Press Release

The internet then runs with it.

Unfortunately 90% of the speculative posts at the end of game news stories are just plain wrong
and / or are written with no understanding of how the actual game industry works.

One of my favorite examples I see over and over is "This MMO will Suck, Because Star Wars Sucked, Because It was based on the Hero Engine and that sucked etc"

The truth is know one has yet to ship anything on the Hero engine out of the box.

Every large company using it had the source code and did heavy modifications to make a AAA level Game.

The same goes for many console games that say they used Engine X.

A lot of the time the engines are a starting point to get up and running and then are heavily modified.
