I've got enough gadgets in my life, including a HP Touchpad.
Trying to convince my parents that they should really take a step up from the year 2000 PMG4 that I've upgraded for them as far as I could. It's really woefully slow these days. iPad and a new iMac should see them right, though. Months of telling them over and over should get them to take the jump too.

Mine arrived, and I finally got it set up. I gutted my 1st gen. iPad and it's now a family device around the living area and kitchen. I'm excited about finally getting to use the iPad in my classroom, as you couldn't really project with the 1st gen. And, there is now a Moodle app!

I bought the 1st gen. for $629 (16 GB, wifi + 3G) and this one for $499 minus data-ready. So, upgraded for more or less the same money. I woulnd't use a MacBook for anything different than I use the iPad for. I'm happy.

I've had good luck with "show, don't tell". I borrowed a spare Tivo from a friend for a couple weeks, and my wife made a point of saying "have fun, but don't get too attached, we're not buying one." 24 hours later she was asking me how much they were- time shifting kids shows was too useful to ignore, and she could see immediately how to use it.
Similarly, I got an iPad 1 for fun and to develop games for, and now 80% of the time my wife is the one using it. All I had to do was hand it to her a couple of times- "here's a funny video"-- and have it set up for our email.
Next time you want to show them a bunch of photos, put an iPad on their lap and swipe to the second photo.

I am thinking of picking one up myself soon. But I need to know if the display out to HDMI is durable.
I use my MBP thunderbolt port and no lie, I have gone through about 7 wires for that port, they all either burn out or maybe the port on my MBP is fried ( I use it daily on multiple screens for about 8 hours a day).
If the iPads can hold up to that kind of stress I will get me one and stop giving these peripheral companies my money ><
