I just saw this at joystiq.. apparently the third game in the Serious Sam series (well it's third if you just count first and second encounter as just one game as apparently they do)... is coming to the Mac! The engine that it runs on "Serious Engine 3" runs very well in WINEskin (that's how I play the HD editions of first and second encounter) although I'm glad they are finally getting around to officially supporting the Mac. They have a faux apple style serious sam 3: BFE commercial out right now.... embedded above.

Source

Some people say this is the game Duke Nukem Forever should have been so it's nice the Mac is getting it too. I wonder who is porting it... previously Ryan Gordon performed the ports of their first games to Linux.

 it looks like that doesn't it? But no it means BEFORE FIRST ENCOUNTER   It's supposed to serve as a prequel story of sorts.

So the names of the main games in the series are:

Serious Sam The First Encounter
Serious Sam The Second Encounter (& both of those as HD editions)
Serious Sam 2
Serious Sam 3: Before First Encounter

:P

BTW, the Serious Sam games have long been great games to play as COOP and can have up to 15 players IIRC in COOP.

Hate the double threads we end up with news posts and user created threads :P Hard to follow both discussions. But I know this thread started before the news.

Anyway, glad this is coming and looking forward to trying it out.

Doesn't matter if it's a duplicate thread as long as it's a duplicate of a news item.  Been that way since we incorporated the news into the forums.

The mac trailer on youtube has a direct link to the game on Steam, which is still the PC only version of course. Seems like it will be Steamplay, but not stated outright.

Woot woot. We need more full featured mac games that offer cross-compatibility when it comes to co-op and multiplayer. Go Croteam!

The game has quietly been released today and they don't even list it as steamplay on steam yet nor do they have it in new release for Mac. But it does show up in your library when it's filtered to Mac games only if you have it purchased and you can dowload it. Also it appears to be fully native albeit not inside a .app bundle. But I guess they wrote it simply so Steam can launch it so they get around how apps that aren't in .app files launch a terminal window I guess.

I hate to be a debbie downer but it appears this game runs like utter trash unless you have a sandy bridge CPU.. even if you have a good GPU backing it up. Lots of people even on PC are having performance problems with the game with GPUs such as a Geforce GTX 295. On my 27 inch iMac I'm getting black screens and hard locks on anything but default settings and 1024x768.

Thing is the serious engine 3 powered first and second encounter run a hell of a lot better on my system in WINE. So does Alan Wake, FEAR3 and even Crysis in cider runs a hell of a lot better at 1600x900 or 1920x1080 resolutons on medium to high settings!

Serious Sam 3 BFE.. are you serious? This is a lot worse for me than The Witcher ever was.

So much for native always being better.

At 1280x720 the cut scenes don't work but the game does... and at a very high frame rate... almost too high.

At 1280x720 the cut scenes don't work but the game does and at a high frame rate..... but at the following settings.

CPU: HIgh
GPU: Medium
GPU Memory: Lowest (customized)
    custom settings:
    compressed colormaps: checked
    Colormaps resolution: Ultra
    Low quality lightmaps: Unchecked
    Lightmaps resolution: High
    Low Quality Normal Maps: Unchecked
    Normal Map Resolution: Ultra

On my Mac Pro I'm getting a mostly-black screen (with vaguely-discernable corrupted graphics) and a hard lock before anything even happens.    I don't even get a chance to change the settings.  I can hear what I assume is the intro, but that's about it.  When I first tried, it wouldn't respond to anything except Command-Q.  On my second attempt, it froze the entire machine.  Not impressed...I've never had a game completely fail to work before, and I've bought a lot of them.  Sadly $13.60 is $13.60 too much...really glad I didn't pay $40.

In the same boat here as Smoke_Tetsu, can run at low/minimal settings, but anything else hard crashes instantly. I played a few levels to get a feel, but I'm not going to play anymore until they fix it, assuming they do. I've posted the same issue on the croteam forum and steam, hopefully we'll get some responses from the devs.

Underneath the epic technical failings, the franticness of the game is enjoyable, and the soundtrack is pretty badass. Let's hope they straighten things out.

So, out of three games from newcomers to the Mac (The Witcher, King's Bounty, Serious Sam), three are broken? Yay... :glare:

Indeed.  At least there's Feral...except for kind of breaking full-screen mode lately.  Sigh.

The Witcher runs 100% badly on other systems, so it should be considered relatively broken. I didn't get a kernel panic with Serious Sam, but it did freeze the entire system, so yeah, really really not good quality control on that.  Actually kind of shocking since it seems so widespread.
