Forum does not allow new members to register

Received an email this morning:


"I have been trying to register on the insidemacgames forums for weeks now. There is an error with the site that does not allow new members to register. The last new member registers in the forums dates back to November 8th so I think this problem has existed for months. I get the following error:


[#10123] The administrator is currently not accepting new membership registrations.


Since you are already registered, can you do me a favor and either email whoever works on the site or start a topic to bring awareness to the issue. It sucks that one of the top communities for mac gamers is shooting themselves in the foot by not allowing new members to join."


I know there's some 10k forum members registered. Not sure this is a technical limitation, or a limit imposed by the web masters for some reason or the other. Hopefully this limit can be raised to allow more to join. If not, then old/not-in-use accounts should be removed to make room.

It's an anti-spam thing as far as I know.  While it's 100% effective at keeping spambots from registering, it does have...obvious drawbacks.

It's called "turned off because we were getting 1000 spammers a day to 1 new user".

I cannot update the forum software to the latest one which still sucks, for some technical reasons I won't go into.

If the mods are up to deleting thousands of spammer account signups again, I will re-enable it.

I will make him an account.  PM me his email address and the username he wants to use.  The anti-spam measures for our version of the forum software has been hacked and is totally useless.  Nobody can spend hours a day cleaning that crap up, it's man against unrelenting machine.  We will reopen registrations when we get our software updated, till then please refer anybody requesting an account to me via PM.  I can easily create an account for them.

Maybe just have a page that tells them to email their adress to an admin, to create a user? And of course, a reminder to use their non-primary email, so they don't get dirty emails from tBC on their work email each day.

I agree, something like that would be more useful than an error message in this case.

I've created the new accounts and notified the users.  It would be helpful if from now on you would supply a username with the email address.  As it is, they can change it to whatever they want, but it would save them the hassle wrestling with a new system.

I've edited my post above to reflect the change.

This is definitely my highest concern. Now I know who all those dirty spam mails are coming from to my email.

No you FOOL, it totally changed "puss" to "puss".  If you will notice the emphasis is nearly 180° what you intended, the innuendo is gone and the letters are made out of entirely different pixels.
