Exit Games recently unveiled Photon Cloud, a hosted network engine for the development of real-time multiplayer games for Mac, Windows PC, browser, and mobile platforms. The service promises to give developers the chance to add online gaming features "easily and without any server-hassle in a fraction of the time."

“Photon Cloud allows developers to build fantastic multiplayer games without any server-hassle, without having concerns of how to globally scale and operate the game as we are taking care of this,” says Christof Wegmann, CTO of Exit Games.

He adds: ”With Photon Cloud is has never been so easy and affordable to build an online game. Photon Cloud starts at just US$9 per month so even a small indie can now build a stunning multiplayer experience for a global audience. We think this is a real deal.”

Since the service’s initial launch 4 months ago, over 4,500 developers have chosen to run their app in the Photon Cloud to take advantage of its benefits:
  • Software as a Service: no server setup or server maintenance needed. Photon Cloud is fully managed by the experts from Exit Games
  • Automatic Load Scaling: Photon Cloud automatically scales with the actual application usage
  • Cross-platform: Photon Cloud is offered for a variety of platforms such as Unity, iOS, Android, Windows, Windows Phone, Mac, Flash, HTML5 and more
  • Photon Unity Networking: combines the ease-of-use of Unity Networking with the performance and reliability of Photon Cloud
  • Competitive Pricing: Photon Cloud is offered in different packages starting at incredible US$ 9 per month. Upgrading, downgrading and cancelling is possible at any time. The detailed pricing is available at http://cloud.exitgames.com/pricing

This seems really interesting. I wonder if it could be used in place of things like GameRanger for companies like Feral Interactive. or make MP feasible with something like Aspyr's recent games (Rage, CoH) both which lacked MP options. Either way it should lead to interesting stuff in the future.
