Inside Mac Games has posted a new review of Aspyr Media's Rage: Campaign Edition for Mac. Originally develped by id Software, the post apocalyptic shooter features the gunplay fans of the genre expect, as well as high speed combat racing and RPG elements.

For additional help IMG has also posted a list of useful tips and tricks for survival in the wasteland.

Here's an excerpt from the review:

Shooting is fun and perfectly done, as you can expect from id software. What keeps things varied and fun is the rather clever AI, which is unique to each bandit clan for example, and makes mutants surprisingly hard to shoot. They will leap, run, dodge, roll and crawl all over the environments to get at you, and larger fights will certainly keep you on your toes. The AI is also good at recognizing where the player is, and will even shout out things like "He's hiding behind that crate!" to their fellow bandits or gang-members. The Authority units are all heavily armored, but ironically the easiest to kill given how slow they are and their tendency to kind of pose before shooting you. They do come up with some shield units to give you trouble, but you have so many explosives and EMP devices it's easy to handle them.

A common misconception that Authority troops are the easiest to kill. They're easier because you're sporting serious firepower yourself by the time you encounter them, most notably their own AV2x rounds which shred their armor and those EMP grenades. Try pulling out the weaponry you used on the first two bandit gangs and the mutants and see how many seconds you survive. It's kinda like trying to duke it out with Gearheads using standard pistol rounds.

I thought the same till I brought too little special ammo to a protracted fight with them. Of course, I was playing on Nightmare, but even so... the fight quickly went from, "Haha, is that the BEST YOU GOT, SUCKAS?" to "RUN AWAY!"

When there's a multiplayer version, I'm going to be on Frost's team. Well, except he doesn't seem to actually need a team...I mean, what's the point? "Hey look, it's Frost and His Merry Gang of Useless Hangers-On!" Or something.

Good point...however I waltzed through them (and the Gearheads who are easily the hardest foes in the game) on Hard using Dynamite bolts with the crossbow. I literally one-shotted everyone pretty much before they could even shoot me. And once they are hit they stop anything and flail around before exploding. The larger units who have heavy armor simply take 3 bolts to the head + one wingstick to decapitate. Shield units can be tagged through their little spot they shoot you at, and given another soldier will often hide behind them its easy to get double kills off a single bolt. Otherwise I always had like 50+ grenades and wingsticks on me, (advanced wingsticks mind you...I was regularly killing 2-3 people at once) so I just spammed both of those and dynamite bolts. Easy win. Still fun just felt a little broken to me and this is why I mention the difficulty/overpowered feeling in the review.

I occasionally used the AV2x rounds, but I always like 400+ of those too. I was using that until I realized how much easier and more efficient dynamite bolts were.

I'm curious, what area did you have a protracted fight with them? I can only think of when you go to the prison or the very end.

I was probably just too stingy with my money... I rarely bought more special ammo rather than making or finding it, and spent my money mostly on parts for my little pal sentry bots or sentry turrets. I'm referring to the fights in the old city mostly, and then that one on the bridge. Both times I ran out of the good stuff and ended up having running retreating battles where I had to wear them down with weak ammo, or go stealthy and try and get in a sniper headshot.

I was tearing them to pieces with the AV2x rounds, until all of a sudden I was out of AV2x rounds and they were still coming. With regular ammo I had to do a couple mag dumps with the AMG to bring one guy down, and using the regular assault rifle was a joke. Needless to say it gave me my respect back for them.

Although, when I found myself 4 feet from the nearest Authority trooper and we both surprised each other in the same room, I have to say it was thoroughly awesome to switch to the Fists of Rage and charge him, and deliver him a beatdown on Nightmare.
