I know about the Marathon UT99 mod, tried it a few years ago. Also would it be a copyright issue with Bungie? Since Doom 3 went opensource and Unity3d has a indie version, what other reasons would prevent a remake?

Good question. I don't think it's an issue with Bungie. They have been pretty supportive in the past regarding mods, remakes and similar based on their games.

The right people have to get interested in making one and have the fortitude, talent and drive to follow through on it.

Bungie apparently still isn't interested in revisiting Marathon just yet save for that oneoff of approving the Xbox port of Marathon 2, and the other route, a fan-made modernized Marathon with full 3D, modern-quality textures, animations, audio, etc. is a lot of work for a lot of people for no pay.

And they should use the Doom 3 engine this time.  :D

I'd love to see it in the Doom 3 engine.  I'm rather partial to the wacky physics of the originals too.  Love the air time you can give your enemies.  I just played through the remade Aleph One trilogy and had a great time.  Blood Tides still rules the roost.

If they did use the Doom 3 engine they could modify the physics to whatever they wish. Same as with any other engine. The ones making the Transfusion project with the Quake engine where modifying the physics there to simulate the build engine Blood uses.

I think it comes down to lack of interest.

The Doom 3 engine would be great, especially with the excellent interactivity with the environment built right in already.
