Hey guys,

I know I am getting it (i've already ordered it). Anyone else already playing or thinking of buying the game?

I was shortly pondering getting it for my PS3, but I'm not sure if I would really enjoy it – I certainly wasn't much into Bethesda's previous efforts Oblivion and Fallout 3. The horrible voice acting, bland NPCs, reused dungeons and especially the clunky combat simply put me off.

I've watched a friend play it on his PC and the interface is just abysmally horrible. The combat, much like Oblivion, is a button-mashing mess. It does look really good graphically though and the beautiful open world offers a TON of things to do and see as you see fit.  So it does have some things going for it. But reviews averaging in the mid-90s across the board???  I don't get it. If Skyrim is suppose to be the pinnacle of RPGs I guess us old-schoolers are in even more trouble than I thought.

In other news, Lands of Lore 1+2 were re-released on GOG today, both of which should run just fine via DOSBox (Boxer).

I have the impression that open world games with lots of crap to do tend to get high scores by default, even if the gameplay mechanics by itself don't really stand their ground.

…and this game is supposed to have a totally humungous amount of stuff to do.

I can understand about the interface, as I remember, Morroriwnd's was not good and Oblivion was not so great either. Supposedly they have cleaned up the bad voice-acting and made the fighting better. …but they are merely what critics* and others have said.

*Like the critics who gave it 9/10 or 5 _*****

Bethesda, like Bioware, cant do good UI's period. They simply have no clue how. It seems modding communities usually 'fix' the bethesda games through hacks and plugins.

Slim to none, I'd say. Bethesda hasn't really expressed much love for the Mac in the past.

I'd go further and say not a chance at all. My teenager is playing it and loving the game (PS3 version). When I read the "M" rating (not that I have any trust in the ERSB mind you) I repeated a bunch of it to my son who replied with "Oh, a typical fantasy RPG then!". Seems like a decent (nice visuals), if boring, typical RPG experience. Probably a very good game, even if the ratings seem a bit skewed up.

I also agree with Frigidman (and as a UX guy) ... The UI sucks something awful. Ugh.

As a fellow parent of twins, you'll have to tell me where you bought your stopwatch that stops time so you can play such time-sucking games.  Or maybe you found a "Cloak of Invulnerability to Wife Wrath."  Whatever.  I'll take one of each.

Har--kids are in bed by 7:30, wife by 10p, so I squeeze in a couple of hours before bedtime. It also helps that I telecommute full time. Gaming lunch breaks ftw! ;-)

I think I'm enjoying SR3 more than GTA because SR3 is more accessible (at least for me). Some might call it a dumbed-down version of GTA, but the GTA games always caused me to rage--I'd be making good progress and then run into a brick wall in the form of an overly difficult mission or activity (I actually stopped playing GTA San Andreas for over a year when I couldn't complete the plane/flying training mission). It seems like you have to be a 12-year-old console gamer with hyperreal reflexes to do anything well.

Skyrim's sheer size scares me--I put in over 120 hours in Fallout 2, and that was one playthrough. Gulp.

The UI is directly pulled from the console versions, meaning it's designed for the controller. It works alright on console, but terrible with kb/m. I expect that they'll patch it somewhat soon though for that.

the mod's always take bethesda's games, and make them a ton better. Oblivion had the most mods lol people did like everything in that world

Thing is we do have Two Worlds 2 and it's new expansion on the Mac  so we're no longer completely missing this kind of huge, open-ended RPG with nice graphics. I liked Morrowind but I don't pine for any offering from Bethesda now I've got my TW2
