You can always play in offline mode. That's what I do for most of my Steam games.
The problem is not that I would have to be online with Steam, but to have Steam loaded beforehand at all, which is sometimes simply a drag. When possible, I try to avoid Steam because of that.

In addition, I'm planning to run Deus Ex with CrossOver Games, which would mean an additional Steam installation in a CrossOver bottle. In theory, that works, but I've run into some problems/annoyances in the past with that.

Great! Thanks for the heads-up. Deus Ex for 2€. :D

Got it.  Can't run it though,  this is my first attempt with Crossover Games so I'm sure it's my fault.  I downloaded the GetGames_DeusEx_GOTY.exe file and ran that.  The game downloaded OK and the installation appeared to go fine.  I try to launch the game but all I get is raw html in a window.

 I installed my copy earlier today and ran into the same problem. Seems this is some kind of browser based GetGames launcher for the game. Installing the Crossover HTML engine in the same bottle at least did not help...

By looking at the html I'd say it might have something to do with registration / license ( showRelicenseButton(param.activation?"endactivation.html":"") ). Can you paste the full html source (the one you posted is truncated at the end) ?

What you can do is save that html (the full one) in a text file, rename it with the .html extension and open it with safari. It might help.

I did that too with the same result.

I tried to do that first thing, but Safari only displays the raw HTML code rather than the page it represents.  Same with Firefox.

The Steam version runs without issues (aside from the mouse cursor thing, but's that's related to CXG10; see the tips & tricks section for a fix).  Normally I prefer non-Steam versions where possible, but with Crossover I stick to Steam, since I know it works, and I won't have to fiddle with wacky installer issues.  As this topic ably demonstrates.

Get Games doesn't give you a serial number that one can plug into Steam, the html is our confirmation screen within which we are supposed to enter our email address and password, that authenticates the game and allows you to run it until the next install.

Yes, that's my point.  I'd recommend buying it on Steam so you don't have to faff about with stuff like that.  Of course it's too late now, but if you'd listened to me in the first place, you'd be playing the game already....

It's impolite to point.  I can't play it on Steam, I don't have Windows, I don't use Boot Camp and the Mac version no longer works.  My point (and it's proper because I'm using my thumb) was that even so, having a serial number to plug into Steam was not possible as can be done with other multi-platform games.

You just said you are using Crossover Games.  So yes you can play it using Steam.  Also, I'm not sure what you mean about serial numbers plugging into Steam...that's not how it works. You have to buy a game on Steam in order to run it using Steam; you can't buy a game from somewhere else.

Actually that depends on the game... Steam lets you activate cd keys from many games even if you didn't buy them directly from steam. Just go to the menu bar and go to games -> activate a product on steam.

So if that other site gave him a proper deus ex cd key he concievably could be able to install steam in crossover\WINE and enter in the cd key and download Deus Ex. I've done this with even non steamworks activated games in the past. This is even true for games that are NOT multi-platform many cd keys for windows only games can be activated on steam and then you download the game from them.  I bought the retail edition of UT3 for example and activated the cd key on steam... and no that game does not use steamworks and no I didn't buy it direct from Steam it was retail.

Of course if you can't get any kind of serial number or cd key or if that serial number is site specific and not one that you'd get when you open a retail box and or if the game isn't on steam then you are out of luck. Like I can't activate Elite Force II because it's not on Steam.

Yeah like I said if Deus Ex isn't a game that came with cd keys or game specific reg codes (meaning they came with the game originally and aren't specific to the site you purchased the game from) that could be entered into that activate product on steam function then one is out of luck and would have to buy the game again to have it on Steam. Just like you can activate your retail copy of Prey for example no matter which version you got (barring you got a console version of course) but you can't activate Borderlands on Steam because Feral uses codes\activation specific to them. So you weren't totally wrong but you where also not totally right either as Steam DOES work that way depending on game. ;) I also activated the original Half-Life GOTY via its retail cd key in Steam and it activates everything related to that game except the source version of course since that's a separate SKU.

After much thought, my considered response is: neener neener neener!  I can play Deus Ex with Crossover and you can't!  Just listen to me from now on, and you'll do OK.  Better yet, do everything I command you to do instantly and without hesitation.  You can start by fetching my slippers.  NOW!
