For me it updated the day before yesterday (a 300MB update) then a smaller one yesterday... still didn't make it playable early but it was interesting that I would get an update for a game that I can't play yet.

Apparently the game's playable now. (Dammit, Amazon, hurry up with my PS3 copy... :glare:)

Yeah, I've played it a bit and it's off to a good start. Runs quite nicely, too. :)

I'm still trying to figure out why they made that "interactive teaser" for Super 8 in the extras section. Seems a bit out of place. *shrug*

Yeesh... taking awhile to decrypt the files. I guess they knew people would be out there trying to hack it to work right after pre-loading... God willing it will be done soon... Peace!

Yeah, not really a fan of the "it's done but we're going to artificially prevent you from playing yet and then you have to sit through decryption and stuff" thing.  Hope it doesn't catch on.  Anyway, indeed it runs well; the engine doesn't seem significantly upgraded from the original so it has a bit of a previous-gen vibe, but with max settings it runs vsynced to a 100Hz refresh rate without breaking a sweat on my Mac Pro, and the environments are quite a bit more detailed.

Well it's simply so that a release date is set in stone. Also, it will help launch day server load a HUGE amount by having all the pre-orders generally.

I'm still waiting for Amazon to even ship the game! This silly Easter business means there's no deliveries on Friday either, so if it's not here by Thurs, then it's Saturday... Then not until Tuesday!

I must say, I can be a bit obsessive when it comes to playing games I really like. Case in point: I finished solo and co-op campaign already (but I have been playing since last night and pretty much all day today - oh wait that's yesterday too now). Anyway, it was a very fun ride. Loved the ending of solo play. They sure came up with some creative/wacky ideas.

Is it worth $50 or more? That's debatable. All I can say, I've got my money's worth out of it.

I really enjoyed it.. it definitely tops the original for me in every way especially with the plot twists, the new gameplay mechanics and the sound stuff. I don't think there's even anything missing in there.... the only negative thing I can say about it is some of the textures in particular of the office equipment where pretty low res even on high settings. But the gameplay, character development, sound etc. make up for it. But then again many games still ship with what looks like low res textures when seen in-game.

Typical. Amazon dispatched late on Wednesday and from Thursday morning on, my disc caught dust in some DHL parcel center over the weekend and holidays. Just now, I got the notification that it has been delivered... and I won't have time to play until the weekend. :glare:

Eeep! That does rather suck.

I ended up sticking First Class postage on Portal 2, and crossed my fingers that Royal Mail wouldn't do the usual and mess me around. Luckily, that meant it shipped Wednesday, and landed on my doorstep on Thursday. Even if it had missed that, it should have still been posted on Saturday...

Anyway, totally loving it. The acting and plot is top notch (though, as I'm familiar with Stephen Merchant's voice, I'm not a fan of his casting), and it's all just brilliantly paced, and set out with puzzles.

As time passes, I do get more and more disappointed with Valve's reticence to give their engine the ground up overhaul it needs. I appreciate that the consoles wouldn't let them do as much as the PC would, but from comparisons I've seen, the PC version has nearly no advantages over the console versions, and that's just stupid. It's impressive the life they've dragged out of the engine, but other companies have gone through 2 or 3 major engine overhauls just this generation.

Even so, the game is fantastic.

Well, as I mentioned it easily runs locked to 100fps on my Mac, at quite a bit higher resolution than consoles can manage, so that's something anyway.  I do kind of wish they'd implemented streaming for the computer versions, so the next level could load in the background in order to avoid the many loading screens.  It could be that consoles don't have the resources to do that, but they could presumably have done it for the PC assuming the engine is flexible enough.  Not having any idea who Stephen Merchant is = near-perfect voice acting from my perspective.

Yeah, but not just PC versions, console too. I mean, there's some pretty clear dividing lines between each of the rooms, which is fair enough, but it's just nonsense for it to then slap a loading screen in your face when so many other games just stream dynamically.
Heck, if they really needed to they could just add a 10 second little video to run in the lift, so at least it feels like you're going somewhere. That's the biggest annoyance for me.

There's a little spot where Wheatly says "Man alive" which is also said by him in a Barclays advert or something... Does my head in. Would've been 100% better if he'd had a slightly broken up voice like Glados did, for me anyway.

Those are pretty much my only two issues with the game. The rest was just sumptuous.
