Just to add another perspective, I want to note that aside from the DLC and installer nuisances, this game runs fine on my plain vanilla (except for 8G of RAM) middle-aged iMac. It does crash from time to time, but usually after I've been playing it for eight hours straight or something. here are the specs for my mac:
Model Identifier: iMac11,1
Processor Name: Intel Core i5
Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per core): 256 KB
L3 Cache: 8 MB
Memory: 8 GB
Processor Interconnect Speed: 4.8 GT/s

I have a Mac Pro 1.1 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_Pro), with 4Gb RAM and its original graphic card, an ati x1900 xt. On this computer DAO was performing bad on Mac side, fine on windows side. But now I have upgraded the graphic card to an ATI Radeon HD 5770, both DAO Ultimate Edition and DA2 performs very well on Mac side too of this same computer. I never tried DA2 with the original graphic card.

Update:
I gave in and bought DA:O Ultimate Edition. I downloaded it from Gamersgate. It took a HUGE chunk of my hard-drive on the Macbook Air 11" Ultimate (2010). Installed it and am still wrestling with the DLC - what a huge pain in the neck. Anyway, the performance so far is excellent. I will come back here later with the screen resolution, but the graphics are set to medium and the textures are high. I don't the FPS, but the game looks and runs great to me. Sorry for the lack of details, but so far so good. I'm still in the opening area of the forest elves, so maybe the performance will dive... Liking it so far, and also liking the idea of expanding the possible games to play on the MBA now that I know I can push it. I also put the MBA on a cooling pad as I usually do. Without it, the MBA was red hot just generating my character!

Well I just bought a new iMac and have been looking at this. I'm looking no more because Amazon has this on sale right now for the low price of $11.97. Downloading now:

Just make sure you click on the Mac download version if you decide to buy.
