It doesn't have Steam Play and isn't distributed on Steam, so no.

We don't know that for sure yet, but you're probably right.

Aspyr have announced a release date of November 23rd :) Pretty quick I have to say. By pre-ordering you also get a chance to win a signed special edition.

Only downside is I can only seem to pre-order the download version ?

Yeah, it seems you can only get the boxed version from Aspyr in the US. Booo!

I'll be getting mine regardless on Dec. 25, but cool that the release date is so soon.

Whatever you do, don't get the GameAgent version as it has their terrible DRM.

Sure about that? According to the FAQs, they use SteamWorks for DRM.

You still have to downlOad the game first, and GameAgent has download limits.

Given that my iMac won't be able to run the game (7600) I won't be pre-ordering now.. I was tempted enough to try and buy the boxed version pre-order last night though due to the competition. However download for the same money - no.

Pre-ordered my box version.  Hope I win because I really want that special edition (I would gladly buy it if they would let me)

Ok, so apparently the GameAgent version ONLY has the Steamworks DRM, not any of the usual GameAgent stuff.

From their blog...

Quote

the game will not be encrypted with Software Passport Mac (The DRM that we typically use for GameAgent digital products), the game utilizes Steam for DRM which means it is account based, not download based. So yes – you buy the digital (or boxed version, for that matter) and you can re-download the game as much as you want. As I mentioned, the game is the same no matter where you get it from. This is the first Mac game to ship to retail using SteamWorks so there is a lot to learn!

Good news.

Aspyr wants convincing that they should use SteamPlay. Go to it.

And convinced they are. Civ V supports SteamPlay – in both directions. (I wonder whether Aspyr got a favourable deal compensating them for the lost sales.)

The bad news: Civ V for Mac does not support mods. :(

W00t? That' been one of the main selling points for the new version. Personally I don't care but there are going to be some really upset people over this. I can understand the creation tools being .NET but surely the mods themselves use the game engine when running.

Oh well I already have the Steam version so I'm happy as I'm sure the game being on Steam will push Aspyr to keep the versions in sync.

Mono is not sufficient for .NET porting?  Obviously not or they would have done it, but I wonder what the issues are.

Awesome news, although it makes the disparate Amazon prices a little silly--$40 for PC, $55 for Mac. Who in their right mind would buy the PC version? (Other than to fully support Aspyr, of course.)

Mono is a bit like you using 10.6 and obj-c 2.0 to develop your app but then having to make it work with only the libraries in 10.4.
I think it's more about the GUI stuff here but the principal is the same, it's a lot of rewriting.

It's apparently available, by the way. I'm just a little bit pissed since I got just this morning an email from Amazon UK (where I preordered), where the shipping date was pushed to mid-December.

I got one as well here in the states saying the box version is "out-of-stock."  This better be a damn joke!  Not a single mention of this for weeks.
