One of my favourite gaming franchises soon to be resurrected. Why aren't I terribly excited then?      Judging by first impressions, looks like it'll be a strongly dumbed-down version for the masses.  Still, maybe one to keep an eye on for those of us who rue the day that Microsoft decided to disband the quite brilliant Ensemble Studios:

Liberator.

The graphics do look quite cartoony :P that said, the gameplay does look very similar to the classic Age of Empires stuff (aka Age of Empires II). I'm looking forward to it, but I'm prepared to be disappointed

there are a couple of good things...Age of empires II had low pixelation and this has better graphics, only that scenarios, landscapes and visuals are too un-serious than the game it really is...Thank god there is a night play mode...and hey the dimensions are also mismatched not like the original AOE II

Weird design decision. If this was some other game I would have said it looked interesting. But the fact that it's an Age of Empires title makes those screenshots just seem wrong.

I guess they made the choice since kiddy design is all the rage at the momemnt, especially for games that target a wide audience. Also, I guess it skales a bit better with different machines?

And now, time for some Legend of Zelda.

I've seen the game first-hand at the GamesCom and the in-game graphics reminded me a bit of Team Fortress 2 – and I haven't seen a lot of people complaining about TF2's style. :P

However, especially the menu graphics are very cartoony. I guess you are right: it's supposed to cater to the casual gaming community and hence sports this "friendly" look. I'm not sure whether the graphics are really that scalable, though: they are pretty detailed, despite the cartoon style.

I just assume they were cell shaded, and I believe that such games in general runs easier on older models, since they usually keep the number of polygons lower.
