In a recent Facebook posting, Virtual Programming revealed that Supreme Commander 2 for Mac will soon be shipping. Gas Powered Games' real time strategy game drops players into the middle of a war between three galactic empires and gives them the chance to command enormous armies comprised of a host of customizable units.

Set 25 years after the events of the original game, Supreme Commander 2 begins with the assassination of the newly elected president of the Colonial Defense Coalition. The CDC members ? the United Earth Federation, the Order of the Illuminate, and the Cybran Nation ? deny involvement, blame each other and galactic war ensues...

Features:
  • A deep and powerful story element adds a personal, human aspect to a storyline previously focused on warring factions and the politics that fuel them. The single player campaign features three character-driven storylines set 25 years after the events of Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance

  • Command enormous armies made up of customizable land, air and naval units. Each of the three diverse factions ? The United Earth Federation (UEF), the Cybran Nation and the Illuminate ? have been completely redesigned from the original game, with many units

  • Experimental units returning with new designs and greatly enhanced looks...and some new tricks that can be unlocked through research

  • New Supreme Commander Gameplay Experience: players now have the ability to research new technologies and units and deploy them instantly on the battlefield, allowing them to upgrade a base-level tank to a high-powered, multi-barreled, AA-sporting monster by the end of a given game

  • Strategic Mode UI: the redesigned UI that is faster, takes up less screen real-estate and gives better player feedback

  • New rendering technology that allows us to create visually spectacular environments

I imagine (extrapolating from the PC specs) it'll be a C2D CPU and 8600 or better from NV, or X1600 or better from ATI...

Basically in line with what StarCraft 2 wants out of you... (no support for the 7600GT is seeming to be pretty much the standard these days, sadly)
Polytetrafluoroethylene to my friends.

Macbook Pro - C2D 2.4Ghz / 4GB RAM / Samsung 830 256GB SSD / Geforce 8600M GT 256Mb / 15.4"
Cube - G4 1.7Ghz 7448 / 1.5GB RAM / Samsung Spinpoint 250GB / Geforce 6200 256Mb
Self-built PC - C2Q Q8300 2.5Ghz / 4GB RAM / Samsung 830 256GB SSD / Radeon 7850 OC 1GB / W7 x64
and a beautiful HP LP2475w 24" H-IPS monitor

As a 7600 iMac owner all I can say is I'm praying for something to get fixed in an Apple update given the recent emphasis on drivers - but it's a slim hope. I just have to start being more selective in what games I can buy ;)

Hi Everyone:

I'm handling PR and marketing for Virtual Programming, and I wanted to let you know that we've posted Supreme Commander 2 system requirements and pricing on our Facebook page:

http://www.facebook....106865022687514

Thanks.

(Edit: Yes, I'm still writing articles at apple.com/games too. My Supreme Commander 2 article will appear there when the game ships. Development is done and we're in approvals with Square Enix.)

Can I liberally copy and paste for those of us who're dead lazy?

Mac OS 10.6.3 or higher, 2.2GHz Intel CPU, 1GB RAM, 256MB video RAM (GeForce 8600, Radeon 2400HD or newer, 5GB Hard Disk space, Internet connection, Steam for Mac (for LAN play; yes, that gives you the PC version for free too)

So bad news for 7600 owners, but not exactly surprising...
Nice work with Steam, BTW.

Hmmm, makes sense I guess. It seems the lack of 7600 support is all about the fact that the extensions and drivers were not good enough, and the fact they are not going to be worked on now. The fact that it is also Steam Play is nice. :D

Does that mean the other way round would have also worked (owners of the PC version get the Mac version)? If so: $&@#*§!!!!! Supreme Commander 2 for PC was dead cheap on Steam not long ago (10 €, or something).

I guess it would. Sucks to be you, oh well. Steam does not really have their prices at that bad normally, and a sale will come along some time soon!

Okay, that question has been answered:

Quote

Just got word back from Brad Cook of Virtual Programming to clear up some misconceptions about the game and Steam. Cook says, “Actually, it won’t be on Steam for Mac. Players will receive a Steam code so they can play over a LAN against others. That code will also give them access to the PC version. But they will initially buy the game from us, through Deliver2Mac or other service.”
