After 3 years and 3 months of dedicated service my HDD has finally given up the ghost. Fortunately I had obtained an external HDD just recently so I've managed to back up what I think is all my data etc.

Only downside is replacing the HDD on my 24" looks to be a bit of a .. awkward job. And it's a little pricey getting it done for me. After a lot of shopping around I've managed to find a company who will collect my Mac from my home tomorrow, replace the HDD with a 1TB drive, upgrade the OS to Snow Leopard (well .. as I'm starting from a fresh drive might just as well finally go Snowy :D ) and deliver it back when they're done. All for £176.25 (inc VAT).

So I'm expecting Snow Leopard plus a shiny new drive will breathe a bit of life back into the old girl. And at least I can say everything is maxed like it's 2006 - 2.33 Ghz C2D, 3GB RAM (3 mem slots), 1TB HDD and the hugely (in)compatible 7600GT ;) I was hoping to jump to a newer iMac however after this extra outlay I'd better get some use out of the drive. At least all you guys waiting on the new iMac won't have to wait long now I've stepped out of the queue. The Law of the Sod will surely mean new iMac's next Tuesday ;)

Naw, iMac update in the fall. Or at least, that's the recent pattern, and if anything, they're getting quite regular with the consumer stuff. ("Pro users can suck it" - S. Jobs)

But, uh-oh, Sunk Costs Fallacy! If your iMac is outdated, you should use the new drive as an excuse to drive the price up when you sell it, not to hold on to it for longer if you wanted a new one.

Oh, I am sure it will be. I am expecting the 5xxx series video cards, and faster connections (FW update and maybe something else).

After noticing some senility in my 2007 iMac, I just bought a very gently used late 2009 2.66 QuadCore 27" imac with 8GB of memory and a 1 TB drive. I, too, expect Apple to announce the 40" iMac with 8-core processors, 32G of RAM, 2G of VRAM, espresso maker, and Floyd Rose locking tremolo for US $1200 tomorrow. That's life in the Mac Lane.

Congrats on your purchase! :) To be honest I think the i7 processor in the top end iMac is great - all I really want is a graphics refresh and then I'll buy. 5870 mobile ?

Got my baby back tonight  :D   And she's faster than ever! So not only were purplemac the cheapest by a long run but the engineer that came round to collect and delivery my iMac was really nice and left you sure that your Mac was in good hands. I'd definitely recommend them to anyone in Sussex/on the South Coast.
