Note on SteamCloud support - the Mac version DOES support SteamCloud, however our implementation of that is not cross platform. i.e. you can migrate your saves from PC to PC, and Mac to Mac, and they won't collide with one another, but your PC saves will not migrate to Mac and vice-versa. Our saves ( and all the other compressed files associated with them when using mods ) are not cross-platform, and we would have had to have thought of that a lot earlier to make it happen. This isn't a limitation of Steam, it's just how we initially wrote the game.

That's from Travis. Please let me know if your experiment works, though.

Hmm.  It worked just fine for me.  I just dragged and dropped the save folders.  I was running Torchlight in a custom Wineskin, but I don't think that would make much difference.

Yeah, I misunderstood what he was talking about. Worked fine for me too. Excellent. My 31st level fighter is safe.

I was playing the PC version, though, just via Wineskin and not on an actual PC.  It does sound like he is saying that what I did shouldn't work but, apparently, it does.

Sweet! I love that they have steamplay for Civ 4, a bonus for me! Also, someone needs to make a steam group for IMG.

Does anyone know if this is actually the case. It says steam play and has mac specs listed. But It says not avalable for my platform when I try to install it, but if I try to purchase it again it says I already own all the items. Guess I'll have to mail support.

Ask and I shall receive I guess

From steam support.

If you have purchased Civ4 on the Mac and are getting an error that it isn't available on your platform we will have it fixed shortly. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Mac System Requirements
Minimum: OS X version Leopard 10.5.8, Snow Leopard 10.6.3, 1GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 8 or higher, or ATI X1600 or higher, Mouse, Keyboard, Internet Connection

That really really sucks.
By contrast, on the Windows side of things, it's DX8.1 level graphics at the minimum... Now that's stuff from 2001.

There must be some kind of launch command to get around that, force the game to load...

What is the steam cloud?  Can saved games go there?  That way as you switched machines, it would just download your saved game from Steam's servers?

I wasn't playing a Steam version.  It was a standalone version in a Wineskin wrapper.  Ran pretty well, too.

Something you have to remember is source's rendering engine was rewritten and is no longer the same one that used 2001 technology. Although I would think that it would not require a GeForce 8 to run and the directX version had different levels (DX8, DX9, etc.) you can choose from from either a command line argument or from the configuration menus. Have no idea if that would work on the Mac version since it doesn't use DIrectX.

ANyway, their servers must really be getting hammered tonight as I had left my download going earlier and it was going to take 2 hours to download and now it was either paused or going at around 50BYTES a second and is saying that it's going to take 300 days.

Darn, Steam isn't PPC compatible. I wasn't expecting it to, but the application didn't show the standard "not compatible" symbol when I opened the dmg file. Instead Steam runs a shell script to check for compatibility. For a brief second I thought there was hope for playing my copy of Braid on the Mac. There are several other independent games listed on Steam that I've played on my PowerBook and PowerMac, such as Osmos, World of Goo, and Civ 4.

Truthfully, I never expect Valve to support the PPC platform since its all but dead. I do appreciate the developers who continue to release games that work with PPC. I never would have finished World of Goo if I hadn't played it on my PowerBook.

Oh well, time to trade up to a 13" MBP.

Well, I guess so, as it seems it would be the Steam game with a lower requirement than L4D2.

Edit2: Meh, Portal is only free to play until the 24th.

Portal is free to play forever, as long as you download it before the 24th.  They've been quite specific about this.

Really? From their portal page:

Free on the Mac. Free on the PC. But only until May 24th. So you only have a few days to decide if your free copy of Portal is worth the price we're currently charging.
I understand that as only free-to-play until the 24th?

Nope.  They've publicly stated that it's free until the 24th, but downloading before then means its yours to keep after that.  So go out and get it!

The Portal download was hammered last night. Kept stalling out. This morning I'm getting 1.4MB/sec via my cable.

Torchlight runs fine on my MacBook with the 9400 card. Nice.
