You want to see the true meaning of heavy, you should try lifting my 110 pound 24 inch widescreen CRT and hauling it up and down stairs. Oh, that way-the-hell-better-than-LCD picture is worth it though.

I said not recommended for wimps.  I wouldn't have any particular difficulty; while not quite being Mr. Universe, I could probably bench anyone here no problem, except maybe the big fatties, whoever you are.    (tBC: if you could witter on about "Mr. Phenomenal" for a while, that would be just lovely, thx.)

Last month my neighbors gay gardner said I looked "awesome".  Last week an old Samoan gardner who wanted work said, "Wow!  You're in really great shape".  I've got the needy gardener and drunk hot-tubber demographic locked in though it sounds like I've come downhill from phenomenal.  I'll fight my way back though.

so my new pro is ordered and ships in a few days;

how well does the migration assistant work?  Previously, ive never used it, but now have enough applications/etc that put their data in strange places that manually dragging stuff over seems like it could be a real pita.  

And... what's the best way to back up a windows install (the saves, mostly) to transition to the new machine.  I know itll refuse to boot if i just move it from one machine to another.

You could try Winclone & using the Windows install disc to repair any problems. Backing up savegames manually is an option too.

Now I'm on the prowl for the 2006 and 2007 to try.

Hopefully I'll have a 5770 soon for testing. If you have a 4870 already, the 5770 doesn't get you anything more for gaming other than more VRAM.

I borrowed a used 2006 Mac Pro from PowerMax.com. I installed the Radeon HD 5870 from our Westmere 6-core along with its boot drive. It booted up the first time no problemo.

I tried the Mini DisplayPorts with and without the MDP to DVI adapter. Works fine. Right now I'm running game benchmarks on a 24" LED Cinema display plugged directly into the MDP.

OWC techies have the 5770 running in their 2006 Mac Pro but could not get the 5870 to boot -- black screen. They are investigating what's different about their 2006 from the one I'm using.

So far I have documented three different boot ROMs for the 2006 Mac Pro. Two of the three will work with the Radeon 5870 installed. All three work with the 5770 installed. On Monday I hope to prove my theory that the 5770 runs just as fast on the First Gen Mac Pro.
