It's like you didn't even read my post. You're using the same logic of why get an iPhone if you're just going to put it in your pocket like a mobile phone from the mid-1990s. Each new device doesn't need a new container. :P

It IS like that! OMG!

No, I just think it will be interesting to see where this thing fits in. Apple spends a great deal of time on the form factor for their toys (At this point, it seems they spend more time on the shell than they do on the guts) and obviously considerations like my seemingly trivial question go into the final design.... Even the basic size of the thing was no doubt the subject of endless debates.

I'm just gonna sit back and see how this all shakes out, because it never pays to be an early adopter (Unless you have to be, because you're a developer or something). I'll let the rest of the technophiles take the plunge on this one, and then watch the inevitable ruckus when Apple drops the price to $299 and doubles the capacity at the same time a year from now.

Maybe I'll get an iPhone then.

No, I think "whose" is correct – DaveyJJ learned English from Jar Jar Binks. ;)

"Whose" is the possessive.
"Who's" is a contraction for either "who is" or "who has" depending on context.

And I'm with alldaveallen: I just can't see where this thing fits in, except perhaps as a glorified e-book reader.
It's pretty, though.

Doesn't "Who's" represent "Who has" ?? Technically speaking he has got it correct - if contractions are allowed :P

No, I got your post explaining how you'll use it. Probably for generally low-requirement office computing that makes a lot of sense. But your Photoshop analogy is just that--an analogy.
If i can use another analogy--My immediate thought was that Apple is coming out with a device that falls between two stools. My boss, however, who's been involved in the Mac community since 1986, thinks they've invented a new stool that nobody even knew they needed before but won't be able to live without now that it exists. We'll see.

I work in a lab, I'm a scientist. We generally have very few requirements about our tools. The main factor is it has to work.

What kind of "scientist"? Didn't you write this? What kind of lab is this anyway?

Well the current lab is studying HIV capsid. It was a stopgap position until I move on to grad school at UW-Madison this fall. I am on a single paper regarding technology and science, though (all other papers are not about computers). It isn't about tablets, however.

I was considering going down to the states to purchase one, but you have to have a US account, with a US credit card in order to buy apps ??

And can you confirm that you can print from the iPad itself?

Will confirm later today re: printing. Most of the apps are in the Canadian store already. Some noteable exceptions ... iBooks (easy to get since it's free), EA games like Scrabble and C&C, iWork apps. I'm trying to get a US iPad owner to gift my US iTunes email account at least the three iWork titles, and pay them back with PayPal. You can set up a second iTunes account for the US store easily to get the free ones.

I was talking to someone at work today who had pre-ordered a 64 GB Wi-Fi iPad model direct from
Apple several weeks ago and was supposed to get it yesterday. He said Apple told him now that
it was going to be delayed by two weeks for shipping...kind of curious what the reason for
the shipping delay is.

They bumped the ship date for later preorders to the 12th a while ago. Apple Stores don't seem to be running out so they might be sending their stock that direction.

iPad has got me interested again. I may trade my laptop for one.

Anyone know if it can print from pages and mail?

Not without transferring the docs, that I've discovered anyway.  I've printed from it (iPad) using WePrint.
