Hi all,

In an attempt to inject some energy (and the recall of fond memories) into this forum, here is the 'age-old' question: What are your favorite games which still run under Mac OS X 10.6.2!?

Here is my list in no particular order:

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri
Fallout
Jade Empire: Special Edition
Jedi Academy
Halo
Command and Conquer: Generals
Samurai
MAME

As I look at my list, I can't help but think that the "Golden Age" of Mac gaming has passed us by! Today's games seem pale in comparison to some of the gems of yesteryear.

Yes I agree. The thrill is gone in the world of computer gaming in general, and Mac in particular.

I still like me some Starcraft and Warcraft 3 along with that CC Generals.
Work: MacBook - 2.4 Ghz Core 2 Duo - 4GB RAM - X3100 graphics.
Home: Mini - 2.0 Ghz Core2Duo - 2 GB RAM - GeForce 9400 graphics.

Mac OS 8.0 - 9.2.2: "Golden Age of Mac Gaming" Just to be sure?
Um, weren't most of the "Golden Age" Mac games video game console ports anyways?
At least I'd dare say a good majority of the pie of "Golden Age" Mac games were console ports? Maybe 60% or so? And that's not to suggest Mac gamers should have gone the console route instead, just sayin'.
Not that they weren't nice and RAVE was promising was it not?

Most of his list are OS X-only games.  No OS 8.0 - 9.2.2 games will run on 10.6.2.

Hardly.

Maybe 10-20%, if that.

I know that. I was replying about the "Golden Age" of Mac Gaming. Which is from Mac OS 8.0-9.2.2 and early OS X. ;)

I haven't a clue; my favorite computer won't even run on 10.6.2. Posted Image
Cypher (PowerMac G5 Quad) – 2x2.5 GHz PPC 970MP / 16GB ECC RAM / 1TB WDC Velociraptor, 2TB STX Constellation ES.2 / QuadroFX 4500 512MB
Chromium (MacBook Pro 08) – 2.6 GHz C2D T9500 / 4GB RAM / 750GB STX MomentusXT / GeForce 8600M GT 512MB
Antimony (PowerBook G4 Titanium) – 1.0 GHz PPC 7455 / 1GB RAM / 480GB OWC Mercury SSD / Radeon 9000 64MB
Eric5h5:
When there's a multiplayer version, I'm going to be on Frost's team. Well, except he doesn't seem to actually need a team...I mean, what's the point? "Hey look, it's Frost and His Merry Gang of Useless Hangers-On!" Or something.

My G5 won't run OS X 10.6.2 or I'd be joining in on the conversation with something more than I can't join in on the conversation.

Haven't played much games on my Mac lately, just a little StarCraft... and.. well that has been about it. Have mainly been playing my DS & NeoGeo Pocket lately.

Still waiting for the original Unreal to be ported to OS X... at least I have a Quake 2 version working on Intel and 10.6.2.

Meanwhile Quake 4 has been amazing, Prey  fun enough, Colin Mc Rae a dream come true and Tomb Raider Anniversary from Feral has been surprisingly pleasant.

I can name a few that we (Feral) ported that originally ran on OS 9 (or below) that still work on 10.6.2  (because we patched them at some point or we dual binary released the game):

Black & White 1
F1 2000
Ghost Master
Rayman 3
Sheep
Sim Theme Park
Total Immersion Racing
Tropico
Warrior Kings
Worms Blast

(Also Max Payne and Zoombinis but we did not develop them)

In fact the list of games that don't still work is much smaller :) Although your point is well made, without patching or a dual binary an OS 9 based game will not run on 10.6 (or any Intel Mac).

Age of Empires II
Age of Mythology
Halo UB

None of the above games are super old, since I haven't been in the mac gaming scene for that long (AoE2 was the first game I ever bought, ever.)

Knights of the old Republic works fine on my MBP. All newer Blizzard games (SC1, D2, WC3 and WoW) too.
You shouldn't ask yourself such worthless questions. Aim higher. Try this: why am I here? Why do I exist, and what is my purpose in this universe?

(Answers: 'Cause you are. 'Cause you do. 'Cause I got a shotgun, and you ain't got one.)

Thank goodness for WINE and DOS Box :)

It's taken a while but I've got most of my golden oldies back again thanks to those two technologies and old used PC versions via eBay etc.
