Spiderweb Software announced today the release of Avernum 6 for the Macintosh, the final game in the epic, award-winning Avernum series. Avernum 6 is set in the world of Avernum, an enormous series of caves far below the surface of the world, and will wrap up loose plot threads from previous games and reveal the final fate of the underground realm and its popular characters.

Avernum 6 is the final game in the popular and long-running Avernum series. Explore a gigantic world, with a fascinating storyline, hundreds of quests, multitudes of side dungeons, and many hours of adventure. The game features clever enemies and dozens of interesting scripted encounters. Learn over 50 spells and battle disciplines. Hunt for hundreds of magical items or craft your own powerful artifacts.

The Story:
Avernum is a world underground. It is a nation of people living in an enormous warren of tunnels and caverns, far below the surface of the world. Once a prison colony for rebels and thugs, it is now a wild frontier, full of adventurous souls looking for wealth, fame, and magical power. Avernum's sole link to the surface world: a single magical portal, small and difficult to maintain.

And then the Blight came. Almost overnight, the mushrooms Avernum needed to feed itself withered and died. Then the denizens of the low tunnels, the savage, reptilian Slithzerikai, emerged. Sensing weakness, they struck, destroying much of a weakened Avernum and creating waves of hungry, desperate refugees. Now chaos and hunger stalk this land, and none seem to be able to find a solution or a way to stop the Slith Horde.

In the midst of all of this chaos, you joined the army. You had a good, simple reason: Soldiers get food. And yet, through a run of good (or bad) fortune, you find that you have a chance to discover and confront Avernum's enemies. The nation of Avernum is rapidly approaching its final destiny, and you will be at the center of events. Can you save your homeland? And, if Avernum survives, what will become of it?

As you wander the gigantic world of Avernum, you will experience:
  • An enormous world. Hundreds of quests, dozens of dungeons and enemy fortresses, and multitudes of characters.
  • A fascinating storyline, full of surprises, treachery, and epic battles.
  • Many unique encounters. Not just mindless hack and slash. Many unusual enemies that will require clever tactics to defeat.
  • Rich game system with over 50 spells and battle disciplines, many character building options, and powerful secret skills to unlock.
  • Unique game world. Unique races and settings make Avernum different from any RPG out there.
  • Experience with previous Avernum games is completely unnecessary to enjoy Avernum 6.
System Requirements:
  • Macintosh running System 10.3.9 or later.
  • 800 MhZ processor. Minimum 1.6 GhZ processor recommended.
  • Video card or processor with OpenGL support and 32 MB video RAM (64 MB recommended).
  • 512 MB RAM.
  • 200 MB hard disk space.
  • 1024x600 screen resolution with 32 bit color.
  • Avernum 6 will run natively on Intel Macintoshes.
Avernum 6 costs $28.00. A demo version is available for download. Head over to the site below for more information.

Ack, I wasn't expecting this for another week or so.  Fortunately I have the willpower necessary to not download yet.

Wow. An Avernum game with the much improved Geneforge 5 engine? And an epic plot which promises the total trashing of a world you've been fighting to save over the course of five games? Sold. I've been waiting for this since Vogel announced this on his blog, and the minute I saw it was released, it was an instant buy for me. I just hope the GIFTS turned out okay.

In that case, Mr. Pixie has an electrical generator he wants to sell to you.  It's very green, it's a magical flying pink pony on a treadmill.

I would strongly advise against that: magic pink pony generators tend to attract flocks of vermin-like braided little girls, and the required fuel is rather expensive (candy floss covered pearls). Furthermore, since magic pink ponies poop rainbows, there's an enormous pollution problem.

Or you could... like... try the game yourself! :o  The demo being 10% of the game should give you plenty of time figuring out if you like it or not.

Just got a bit into the demo myself, and I really enjoy some of the UI changes; it's about time, too! Being able to play in native resolution is also quite nice.

I'm powering through Avernum V as fast as I can to be able to get to Avernum VI.  I'm half hoping some NERD will cobble together a walkthrough before I tackle VI myself.  Meanwhile, you can play the free demo yourself and let US know.  Slacker.

You mean I've got to play through the first 5, first?  I did download the demo.  Play it, and find out myself?  Next thing I know, you guys will be telling me my question was answered in a previous email.  Sheesh.

No, it is not required that you play the previous games, I was in the middle of Avernum V though when VI came out.  Yes.  So you are denying that you got the email?  Typical of your ilk, you're why Bungie sold themselves to Microsoft, you and your smarmy spawn.

If you'd just played Avernum V before instead of endlessly faffing about playing Nethergate 7 trillion times, you could be playing Avernum VI right now....
