Werit has posted a new interview with Runic Games Matt Lefferts about the company's action RPG, Torchlight. The game gives players the chance to choose a character and venture from the safety of the town of Torchlight into randomly generated dungeon levels. Once inside they find a variety of monsters, a large selection of loot to find, and quests to complete.

Werit: What sets Torchlight apart from other Action RPG's, like Diablo II?
About 10 years for one. As kidding as that is, there’s a lot of truth to it. D2 has been around for a while now as one of the most fundamental games in the ARPG genre. It set and reset the bar many times over. Since then, the genre has had time to evolve in different ways but at its heart remains pure kickass fun. When we set out to make TL that was the number 1 thing we tried to keep in mind. Let’s not get bogged down with attempting to create a new innovations, let’s stay true to the roots and make it a badass click fest.

Werit: The infinite dungeon sounds interesting, how does it work?
The Infinite Dungeon is something that becomes available to the players after completing the main story quests. New quest givers and appear in town, near the graveyard, where there is an entrance through a mausoleum. Levels and monsters are randomly generated. This is where someone can really put their skill to the test because as they go deeper, the difficulty ramps up.

Werit: What kind of benefits and perks can your retired character give? Can they ever come out of retirement?
Currently there’s no way to get a character out of retirement. The benefits of it are tied to that. The whole point of retiring a character is to pass down an heirloom item to one of your descendants, the next new character you create. The item’s requirements are decreased, while it’s damage and bonus effects are increased. Just like the infinite dungeon it opens up after you beat the game.

A recent Runic Games press release confirmed that a Mac version of the game is planned for release in 2010.

OH! I know when the release date for this game [for Mac] is! It's... probably before Diablo III. :o

I guess I'll be installing Diablo II again... oh wait, I have Bioshock. =)

"Probably" before Diablo III?

Absolutely, certainly before Diablo III. Blizzard has said D3 is now 2011 (at least). The Torchlight MMO might be out before D3 hits the market.

That infinite dungeon sure sounds neat. I'm definitely looking forward to this one. Until then I think I might try the Windows demo tonight.

So I tried the demo and ran out of the trial time faster than I wanted it to. Just when the going was getting good. It has such a striking resemblance to Diablo (1) it ain't even funny. That said, it's a very fun game. I love the Vanquisher's Ricochet skill as a shot can kill ten or more baddies at a time if they're lined up right. I very much appreciate that you can send your pet to sell off all your unwanted items. It definitely saves you a lot of time going to town and back.

It runs perfectly on my Macbook with the integrated NVIDIA chip with everything on high. Looks good, sounds good, good fun. I might actually buy a license for the Windows version until the Mac one comes out.

You mean you ever uninstalled Diablo II? ;) I've been addicted to it since it came out! I have hundreds of single-player characters of all sorts of builds.

I'll need a new Mac to play Torchlight and the other newer games...

Unless your Mac is ancient you shouldn't have any problems running Torchlight when it comes out. After all, it was designed to even run on crappy Netbooks.

Tried out the demo in Windows and it sold me on the game. What's the word on when it's out for Mac?

Integrated nVidia chip ... check.

Many people say it runs OK on Intel crap, too, with everything turned off except 'netbook mode' if need be. Runs fine here on a Geforce 6600 under Wine, in D3D mode perfectly and OpenGL mode its fire effects are a alpha quads but otherwise OK.
