Is this a pipe dream or something we can look forward too in 2 years from now?

I wouldn't call it a pipe dream but I'm hoping MW was financially successful and I'll be patient for the Mac port of MW2... because I sure as heck am not going to be a sell-out BootCamp-er for MW2.

With Aspyr's track record for porting times as of late I'll be buying the Windows version despite having gotten the Mac version of MW1. MW1 was just so good I can't stand to wait longer than I have to in getting MW2.

If I'm not mistaken there's been a lot of controversy over the multiplayer aspects of MW2 with the removal of dedicated servers and the use of a controlled matchmaking service. Steam is also used for anti-cheat instead of Punkbuster. I'm guessing that even if MW2 is ported to Mac, getting cross-compatible multiplayer going might be more difficult, having to port Infinity Ward's matchmaking service and fight to finally bring Steam over to Mac. Of course, Mac only multiplayer isn't uncommon in Mac games. It be interesting to see if there is an uproar in the PC community if the Mac port of MW2 were to allow dedicated servers between Mac players.

Good point....so the moral of the story is to get the PC game if you want to play asap and hope for the best in a 2 years time for the Mac.

Ran into this thread on rockpapershotgun.com

They mention the use of "IWNet" which brings thoughts of Battle.net to mind.

Bowling makes clear he’s not totally clear on the tech aspects, but he does seem certain that everything will run through IWNet, in conjunction with Steam. That seems to imply no mod support.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that IWNet and Valve tech used makes a Mac port more difficult :(

I tend to really enjoy the single player game most of all as there are too many experts on the multiplayer by the time I get to try. It is always a shame when multi-player issues and middleware stop a port being viable.

I got both pc & mac versions of Modern warfare. Will most likely do the same for #2. Assuming there is a mac port of course, but I certainly hope so. While I do use bootcamp (gaming aside, I also use it for a research database program that's pc only) I prefer mac games when possible. At least if the performance is good. I was really excited about Prince of Persia (newest one) but when I read the performance was quite poor I didn't get it. I was very happy with Modern Warfare's performance on the mac side. Didn't notice a difference between that and the pc.

Emphasis (bold) added.

Don't let that discourage you, it's not like you're investing your real life and you get to respawn to try and try again... learn their techniques, that's how you will start getting the higher kill ratio (which, to me, is more important that the overall high score; the better survival rate). I personally try to use the weapons that are more difficult to kill with. The AK-47, for example; low bullet output rate, high recoil, more difficult to draw/aim... then you switch to a weapon that takes less skill with less recoil, higher bullet output and better overall accuracy like a P90, G36C, M4 or M16 and it's like you're playing with a LASER weapon! lol

Please note the above statements are made based on BASE CONFIGURATION of said weapons.

Even if I were interested in MW2 (which I'm not since I find the Call of Duty series completely overrated), I would not even think of rewarding Infinity Ward/Activision for this borked PC version: as mentioned above, obligatory matchmaking service with no dedicated servers, only 9 vs 9 multiplayer, no console commands, no ability to kick obnoxious players, no mod support.

Then add (at least) one extremly controversial level and you have one game I would not even put a finger on.

I urge everyone here not to by it. IW is pulling some major dick moves by removing basically everything that makes PC gaming good - including Dedicated Servers.

I agree in spirit. They're saying the single player campaign (the only part I'll ever play) is going to be the same length as the previous, and yet the price has increased. On top of that increased purchase price, they're going to charge EVERYONE for DLC - including PC.

While I didn't think the 'free DLC' ride for PC would last forever, there's enough information out there on this game that I've pretty much given up on this game as something I'll want. Too much of the appeal is gone and moreso for reasons that most PC gamers don't seem to be all that worried about.

Same length? Another reason for me not to buy it.

Im not going to get it as part of my larger boycott of Activision.
But I might consider buying it second hand from a bricks and mortar store so that they get a much bigger cut of the profits whilst Activision get a measly 0%.

As for the PC version being a total mess, IW have gone down in my estimations because of this. They're trying to pull and Apple on us and give us absolutely no choice in the matter, but when it comes to a lot of PC gamers, that's just not going to cut it. I wouldn't be surprised if the PC sales dropped by more than half compared to CoD4 and Activision and IW start thinking more about leaving the PC market for good (and good riddance, I say, we just need to get them to leave every market and Id be happy).

I just read that there's a Online retailers boycotting Modern Warfare 2. Although in the case of Direct2Drive . . . their reasoning about a 3rd party service being needed for the game seems a bit dubious. I know of at least 2 games in their lineup that come with / require Games For Windows Live, which is necessary to have a login for and must be running or you can't a.) play the game or b.) save your game. In the case of Batman Arkham Asylum, I lost connectivity to the GFWL server and it kicked me out of the game. Complete and utter BS . . .

In addition, Direct2Drive is a Gamespy service... and there are games on Steam that attempt to install the GameSpy Komrade IM / buddy service.

Now if D2D is showing solidarity with fellow PC gamers . . . on that front, I can get with that struggle... but a point about 3rd party software / connections is definitely a strange argument.

But neither GFWL nor the GameSpy networking thing is a competing store front.
It'd be like (bearing in mind I don't know many US shop names) Wal-Mart selling you a game which needs you to pop into GameStop every time you want to play. Since you have to go to Gamestop to play the game in the first place, and they've got all these brightly coloured displays too, why not just buy the game from there in the first place?

Aside from DLC, GFWL and GameSpy aren't a direct form of competition to D2D or Impulse or whoever, whilst Steam is. Since Steam is also the biggest fish in the DDL market, this is obviously a very threatening prospect. There's been a few other games that have used Steam in the past, like Empire: Total War, but MW2 is the biggest game release of the decade and D2D are simply joining in with all the controversy and trying to kick up a fuss.

All being said and done I'm currently investing my spare time learning programming so I can recreate the game in its entirety for my fellow Mac OS X-heads!

I've a rudimentary screenshot of my initial 3D renderings... which, unfortunately, is limited to ASCII art output for now;

I can see it already. 1st thing that would happen would be a "Im a mac and Im a pc" ad talking about why macs are better for gaming.
