Upon arriving home from school today, my dad informed me that he ordered a brand new, loaded MBP. I kinda frowned as the nehalem MBP's are coming soon, but it'll fit his needs just fine.

Specs: 3.06 GHz // 4 GB DDR3 // 9600M GT 512 MB // 256 GB SSD // 15"

I have two questions:

1. What SSD is the BTO SSD that apple includes. I'd like to look up some benchmarks on whatever is inside there

2. I inherit his old MBP (in sig), but I'm planning on selling it as well as my homebuild PC and buying a newer MBP with the 9600M, or possibly waiting for the nehalem ones. So what would be the approximate price I could get the old MBP? Its used, but kept in good condition, however there is a slight bend in it. It doesn't affect anything but when the lid is closed its noticeable as the screen isn't flush with the bottom of the computer. Do you think I could get a $1000 ??

Might sound odd, but have a look on eBay, see what that general type is selling for, and then give it $100 -200 more (or something like that).

By the way, remember Apple hardware always stays at a far better price for the years, while you homebuild would have to be sold for far less.

I've been browsing ebay, But I'm still not sure how much I'd get for my MBP, its looks to be about 900-1100.

For my homebuild I'm hoping to get $600

Remember that the prices on eBay will (nearly) always be a few hundred dollars below the price that the computer will actually be sold at. I think that you might be able to get it at $1500 or so.

I don't think we will see i7 macbook pros until the new year - maybe i7 iMacs before then.

What I'm really looking forward to is the GPU refresh in the MBP, i7 will be really nice. But its the GPU thats pretty slow right now

I think he might mean that the price in an eBay auction tends to jump quite a bit at the last minute, so looking at in-progress auctions will not give a good idea of the final price. This however, is why it has a 'search completed auctions' feature. I've seen similar MBPs to yours going for over $1000 CAN, so I think there's a good chance you can get at least that much.

You can try Craigslist prior to that if you want - it has the advantage of keeping things local, and no fees. You don't reach as many potential buyers though.

My dad's MBP arrived today. The SSD is really a pleasure to work with. There's no sound coming from the drive, none whatsoever, and I never really noticed drive noises until I played around with this computer - its dead silent.

The main thing though is the speed of the drive. On the fresh install of Snow Leopard, the computer can shut down and reboot and be ready to use in about 12 seconds. I've never seen a boot time come close to that. I've planning on definitely buying an SSD for any laptops I own in the future

That does sound pretty impressive. I was considering whether to get a SSD with my Macbook when I got mine, but it just proved too costly for me at the time. I'd imagine prices for SSDs to be down a bit (or so I hope) whenever it is I'm going to look for a replacement for my current Maccer, which probably won't be for at least another two years.

How fast is it when writing data in comparison to standard HDs, 5400 or 7200rpms?

I'm considering buying a 128 GB SSD, as they are significantly cheaper then the 256 GB ones. And then using a 1 TB external for all of my big files that I don't need all the time (like movies) and windows

I'm running a 256G Crucial SSD M225 in my MBP Unibody currently. It's a screamer.

Compared to the best 7K notebook drives, it's over twice as fast doing large sequential transfers and ten times faster doing small random transfers. It's also ten times faster in random transactions per second.

Another advantage: conventional HDDs slow down as much as half when nearly full. SSDs don't slow down.

Some users have reported waking issues with their MBP when using an SSD. I haven't had any such issues.

I'm positive now that an SSD is the best upgrade you can do for your computer. The hard drive is the slowest part of the computer, thus upgrading it to something substantially faster will give you the most noticeable performance boost. A lot more of a boost then a few hundred MHz, or another gig or two of RAM could do
