Best free turn-based strategy... even if it has no player base?

My friend and I are looking for a turn-based game (preference for sci-fi) and he's ludicrously cheap, so... a free one. Either broswer-based or Snow Leopard-ready.

We don't care if nobody else is playing, so that's not a factor.

Any suggestions?

TIA!

Best free TBS there is. Not scifi, though. (Honing telegram style. Full sentences overrated.)

EDIT: Just remembered scifi TBS: UFO AI.

When did TBS get a graphic update? I like the current style!

Cool--thanks! I know I've heard the name Wesnoth. Will try both.

My favorite turn-based sci-fi strategy games were Massive Assault and Massive Assault 2: Domination. I don't know if they're available anymore, and I'm fairly certain Massive Assault 1 doesn't work on intel Macs. (to be honest, MA2 is just better in terms of stability and features anyway, so I don't think it matters so much).

They aren't free, but they're old enough I'm sure you could get them for a bargain price.

Domination is only distributed digitally, so it's available until the end of time, or until Virtual Programming disappears, whichever comes first. It's $30. Well worth it, but it's not free.

Just to add another factor in Battle for Wesnoth’s favor: it now has an iPhone version, which plays cross-platform.

What?! Wesnoth has an iPhone version?

Wesnoth is pretty fun, reminds me of the Shining Force games on the Sega Genesis.

EDIT: or Dark Wizard from SegaCD.

It's not quite free, but you should check out Star Chamber. I had a post on here a while ago (linked below) where it gives some details and shows where to get the mac client from.

In short its a turn based board game with space theme, with the trading card twist. Build ships and citizens, explore, expand and fight. The card aspect provides rule changes that make it such a varied game. Ten races , all with different playing styles. The important note is that after the $10 starter pack the friendly player base will happily supply serious players with a complete set of commons for free. And its no problem to play common only games.

Buy the way, UniWar may fit the bill in future: it supposedly has a FaceBook version coming, so that would count as Mac support :) I’ve enjoyed it on iPhone so far, though I haven’t gotten into it very far yet.

I’ve tried Google I think—is that the one with all the “oooooo”s at the bottom? But I was looking for specific Mac game recommendations (and recommendations based on quality rather than playerbase). This site seemed better suited to that.

Thanks, I’ll check it out.

Send a pm to Mattness either here or on the SC forum for the download of the mac client. You can go into the lounge and play trail games for free to check it out. Ask someone to play with you. The crowd are very friendly and always happy to develop new players. I guess Sony have dropped the ball on SC but it hangs around with a long standing and stable player base.

Its a steep learning curve but the card aspect really makes for a deep and varied game on top of the strong board play.
