I was having some major problems with windows 7 on my homebuild so I decided to wipe the HDD and install Ubuntu 9.04. I have to say that initially I really didn't like it, but after using it for a few days extensively I can say without a doubt that Ubuntu is a very good OS. I like it better the windows 7 , although it obviously doesn't compare with Leopard or SL.

The UI is a lot more mac like then I thought it would be and it was incredibly easy to install drivers for everything. Open Office works fine for word processing at least, I haven't tried making a presentation or spreadsheet with it yet. Rythmbox syncs with my 1st Gen nano wonderfully. The OS has a really nice spaces feature where if you hold your mouse over a blank piece of desktop (regardless of what app your in) and scroll the mouse wheel it jumps to the second space. This is extremely useful for music and email, as you hand never has to leave mouse, but the shortcut is still very fast (faster then a keyboard shortcut)

All in all I was pleasantly surprised by the functionality and practicality of Ubuntu.

I've never been able to get very far with Ubuntu for 2 main reasons. a.) Ubuntu doesn't like my Broadcom wireless device in my PC and b.) the X-Fi drivers for Linux don't seem to work right (or I'm missing something in the install instructions).

So, internet-less and sound-less, my desire to experiment / learn Ubuntu really doesn't last long.

Ubuntu on the desktop is getting increasingly mature. I still favour Debian when running it headless, and both have come leaps and bounds in the past few years. Hopefully they'll continue to do so.

I'm actually TOO good at both TMFPPG and Fable:TLC.
I sleep in a BBEdit T-shirt, but I'm a TextMate user.
