Just wanted to share this link, where you can sign up for the new OnLive service. Only for US citizens though.. :(

From Wikipedia:

Quote

OnLive is an on-demand video game platform, announced at the Game Developers Conference in 2009.[1]The service is a gaming equivalent of cloud computing: the game is synchronized, rendered, and stored on a remote server and delivered online. The service was announced to be compatible with any Windows PC running Windows XP or Windows Vista, or any Intel-based Mac running OS X.[2] A low-end computer, as long as it can play video, may be used to play any kind of game since the game is computed on the OnLive server. For that reason, the service is being seen as a strong competitor for the console market.[3][4] Thus, Engadget states that "Broadband connections of 1.5 Mbps dials the image quality down to Wii levels while 4-5 Mbps pipes are required for HD resolution." The average broadband connection speed in the US at the end of 2008 was 3.9 Mbps, while 25% of US broadband connections were rated faster than 5 Mbps.[5]
It was announced that Electronic Arts, Take-Two, Ubisoft, Epic Games, Atari, Codemasters, THQ, Warner Bros., 2D Boy and Eidos Interactive have signed up to have their PC games available on the service.[6] Sixteen game titles are currently available from the OnLive service.[7] The service is currently in closed beta with plans to have an open beta during the summer of 2009. The service is planned for release in the winter of 2009.[8][9]

I can't wait for this. Signed up way back when it was announced. I hope the beta starts soon--summer is fast approaching!

Correct me if I'm wrong but onlive can be used on os x and windows xp&7? If not, then why is this in the Gaming on Mac section?

Yes, it works on OS X.

^ What he said.

This is very promising, because basically this could mean crysis running on iPods and cellphones... The potential is enormeous!

I'm out the the US right now, and won't be back till late October. I'll try it out then if the service is still accepting beta testers.

I thought the first beta testing was only California due to the company only having the one west coast cluster of servers? Guess not now. Excellent news. I will definitely be on board when it hits Canada as some of their proposed titles and partners are awesome.

Same here. I'm still rather skeptical about how well this is going to work. It's just one of those things that sound a bit too good to be true.

I think it has the same possibility of success that .mp3s and YouTube has. It'll be 'just good enough for anyone with enough money to pay for it, and they'll see the high cost of an X-Box 360, a gaming PC and the associated games as far too much in comparison. That's my thoughts on it, assuming it delivers on its promise. THE problem will be the game library. If it doesn't have a large enough and compelling enough game library, it'll quickly go the way of the Phantom. Remember that console? It was supposed to be a console version of Steam (in a simple manner of speaking).

Well I signed up. I thought it was that you just get in, but after signing up they say they'll let you know if you'll get in the beta. Somehow I don't think I'll get picked as I selected "I don't know" for my net speed. I'm moving in a few weeks to a new ISP and I don't know what I'll have yet. I think I'll do it again once I have.

Anyway no news on this in awhile, but I'm still interested whenever it launches to see how it performs.

Yep, we have, and I'm sure this will have similar results.

Realistically, if you like gaming on a god-awfully inputlaggy 30+ ms old LCD, and think of that as sort of the "best" end of the potential image lag spectrum, then it sounds like this is the service for you.

I personally find anything over 3 ms to be too slow, and 15 ms or more is irritatingly so.

I've got a good enough machine that I wouldn't need the service (next to last released MBP) but I just like the idea of the tech and as I said before, interested in trying it out if I can.

The idea is your machine specs are meaningless.

All a gameplayer has to be is a keyboard & screen with a broadband walkie-talkie in it:
1] You push LEFT on your keyboard.
2] The signal goes to the gameserver: DISPLAY GRAPHICS FROM LEFT PERSPECTIVE
3] The signal goes to the gameplayer: DISPLAY GRAPHICS FROM LEFT PERSPECTIVE.

They say the lag is negligible.
And the brains invented the QuickTime codec -- he's an ex-Apple guy.

All you need is a fat enough pipe.
Like TEK says: you can play Crysis 2 on an iPhone.

I went beta the moment it became available.

It sure does, TEK -- it sure does .... > "Crysis On An iPhone" GamePlay Video

Imagine feeling completly left out of iRacing.Com but now you'll be able to play it in the tub!

I can see it working.... I'm just not sure I can see it working yet. But it has to start somewhere at some level, it can't just magically jump to perfect performance for everybody at once. You have to learn to cartwheel before you can learn to crawl... or what is it you land living mammals say?

Here in the ocean we say: You have to learn to breathe before you can drown... otherwise you'll only suffocate.
You shouldn't ask yourself such worthless questions. Aim higher. Try this: why am I here? Why do I exist, and what is my purpose in this universe?

(Answers: 'Cause you are. 'Cause you do. 'Cause I got a shotgun, and you ain't got one.)
