Trying to get the new version of the forum software in place... however I don't believe it will make a lick of difference. Any 'known code' (open source or otherwise) already has workarounds for it by spam bots and spammers. The only way to slow them the hell down, is to do what we were doing for years. Which is restrict signups to "REAL" email hosts and disallow any stupid freebie accounts.

Fine. But how am I going to reconcile all this with the 12 year old Japanese girl that lives inside me?

And that's just the stuff that slips in after we've checked in; you miss the river of stuff we catch before you guys see it. I've deleted about five or six times as much spam in the past 7 days as I have in my whole time as a mod here. It's frakkin' retarded...

Now that this guy has created his user account, can't you bolt the doors shut again? I mean, Im used a hotmail account to sign up way back when, and I imagine that's one of the free emails that was blocked? So blocking up the holes again and coming up with some course of action to ensure this doesn't happen again would be... good?

EDIT: Just to give you guys an idea of what we're dealing with, from May through mid-August, the spam deleted from the forums fills up one page of the "trash" forum list. Spam deleted since August 21 when the torrent started fills up a little over FOUR PAGES.
EDIT 2: And I caught another two spambots while they were registering while typing this. I'm afraid my M1 Garand is no longer effective, I need to send a request to supply for a Browning 1919.

You could try chucking an empty clip against a hard object to get the same ping and draw them out for some easier kills...

Exactly.
Two other things, would it help if when the mods are not on the board, that a member PM's them about another spammer? Or is that not needed? Also, what about Tesseract (as he would be able to cover the other time zones that you guys cannot)? More hands make less work.

We all get a PM whenever someone reports a post, so you don't need to actually PM us, just report a post and we'll all get a notice. Whoever sees it first will 86 the spammer. And yes do please go ahead and hit report when you see spam. I have Mail up and running at all times on my computer and it checks for mail every 5 minutes, so if I'm at my computer, I will see your report within 5 minutes of you sending it. Even when I'm not at the computer, Eric seems to practically live here, so I'm sure he'll see it.
Make sure you send it in Sand or Comic Sans just for him.

First we tried the captchka (sp?), then upgrading the forums with a lifetime license for InvisionPower . .. it seems our spam registrations were only slightly negated by that changover.
When there was a site with E-mail spammer domains, I was slowly harvesting that information and adding it to the blocked domains, but as has been pointed out, more and more are coming form GMail, Yahoo and Hotmail.
THEN we locked it down to admin approval ONLY... that stopped the spammers cold, but then we always had to have someone on the boards every day, which got harder as time went on. Additionally the spam registrants were getting so high that we found it easier to simply delete all of those entries - potentially stopping interested registrants.
Finally we stopped producing our podcast, and things slowed way down for our board, so I pretty much took the BIG leap and locked registrations. That's it! No more... You snooze, you lose. No more spammers.
