As per subject---family fight and something's different about my machine....is there a log I can look at to see what what the fire truck happened? Every time I go into Console I get trapped with the Crash.Reported (as in all I see). Plus I don't understand what it does say---somebody messed this up and I wanna know how!

My lady is mad at me.

Apple menu/About this Mac/more info.../Logs/Console log
or ~/Library/Logs/Crash Reporter(folder)

Since a lot of that stuff is for Clingons to decipher, I'd launch AppleJack
Good luck, and get some flowers and chocolates for your lady.
Maybe take some ibuprofen too. ;)

I do have Time Machine backups--do I just restore my Preferences folder? Does TM allow you to mess with the system?

If that's what you want to do, yes.

Something you might try is create a new account (assuming you don't already have one) and log in as that user, see if the crash goes away. If it does, it's probably a software prob: something bad installed, or a corrupted pref file or something. If it doesn't, is something worse.

Did you run Disk Utility and scan for problems?
