Speaking at the QuakeCon 2009 event id CEO Todd Hollenshead recently revealed that Quake Live will finally be released on August 18 for Mac and Linux users. The browser based shooter is adapted from the Quake III engine. Also speaking at QuakeCon John Carmack mentioned the upcoming addition of a premium subscription service, implemented due to lackluster performance of the current in-game advertising model.

During his QuakeCon keynote address, Carmack explained to the crowd that in-game advertising was not enough to support the web-based title.

"The in-game advertising stuff has not been big business," he admitted. "That's not going to be able to carry the project."
Quake Live subscriptions will allow players to configure and run their own private servers for the shooter. Carmack also noted that the game will never go entirely pay-to-play.

"Quake Live is gonna be Quake Live for the foreseeable future," he said. "It's only just now that we're going to be able to put it to the test."

Any word on requirements? I have a 2.2ghz core 2 duo macbook w/ intel x3100 graphics. I love Q3, hope it'll play now that it's converted to Flash!

You don't have to worry about that, since it's not Flash.  If it was, it would have been available for the Mac from the beginning.

It's pretty likely you'll be able to play it on you machine, the requirements are deliberately low. The Mac specs aren't out yet (at least I haven't seen them), but you could check the Windows requirements.

What are the Windows requirements? (You can't even VIEW the system requirements if you don't meet them  And until tomorrow, my Mac doesn't meet them. So the link doesn't work--even with a user agent spoof for some reason.)

I'm sure my Air will be fine--it plays World of Padman OK, which is a pretty advanced variation on Q3A.

 Very weird. I can see the requirements page without any problems using my trusty Mac using Safari 4.0.3, Firefox 3.5.2 and Opera 9.64 without any tricks. I wouldn't even have been able to link to that page otherwise.

Yep, no problems seeing that page (on a PPC Mac with Safari 3...yes I know about Safari 4 and no I haven't bothered upgrading to it yet).

Carmack just said that the advertising isn't covering the costs of QL....

Looks like they might have to start offering a premium subscription to remove those ads and get some money flowing through the system...

Or put more ads in. Development costs aside, if every usage of the system costs more in server expense than it returns in ad revenue, then there aren't enough ads! (Hate to even suggest it.) So every time you play the game it sinks them further in the hole?

...playing an FPS in a browser still doesn't sound appealing to me. But on the brighter side; I just ordered a new PowerMac single 2.66GHz Quad-Core Xeon, 3GB RAM, 640GB HD, Radeon HD 4870 512MB, 2* 18X SuperDrives... not the best of the bunch but better than I've had in awhile...

It's only "in a browser" in the sense that a full-screen video is in a browser, or a Unity-based 3D game. In other words: full-speed performance and no window border. The experience need not be any different from playing a standalone game.

Looks and plays great, with good mouse feel, on my first-gen MacBook Air (1.8 Ghz, GMA X3100). At least, at 800x500 with textures set to Medium and ALL other settings turned on or set to max. (At 1280x800 with textures on High, it wasn't always smooth.)

I beat the exam bot 12 to 10, whatever that means. My player name... wait for it.... Nagromme.

Two bugs:

1. Right mouse button does not work (this seems to be universal for all Mac users).

2. Often crashes right after a match. Not the end of the world--just don't leave half-finished forum posts unsaved in some other window!

That's too bad. Strange of them not to make that more clear.

It also seems to require Leopard: in the forums, Tiger users see an instant crash. But that may be a bug that will be fixed.

On which of the three levels?

I'm having a blast so far considering I haven't touched Quake 3 for... five years or so. Yes, it's buggy but the "Beta" tag is there for a reason.

By the way, my player tag is surprisingly "Janichsan".

Levels...?

Do you mean the trickjumping test at the beginning? I could have made it eventually but I gave up after a bit and when through the first door.
