Hey, I'm selling my old MacBook Pro on eBay. If you're interested in buying it off me before someone else bids, send me a PM here, or click my name in my signature to get my email address.

I'm also available to answer any questions, including those with regards to the maximum GPU clock speeds that this particular model can manage.

Thanks!

Relisted the MBP and dropped the price by $100. Ends Friday, and there are five people watching it.

Were you quite certain it was spam?
- disjointed grammar and a general lack of a proper command of the English Language? . .
Nope

- attempting to sell something inappropriate for my needs or for what might interest me in these forums?
Nope

- poster is from a foreign land
Well, Illinois is foreign in that the pronunciation is not a 'settled upon' thing, but Nope!

- Post title is a non-English word or other strange conglomeration of letters
Nope

I'm afraid this post fails the Spam test.

Better luck next time TBC.

A "writing miasma"? Aren't you selling me a bit short? :P

Anyway, I relisted the MacBook Pro one more time--this time at $999. It's not getting any cheaper!

post what it sells for, cuz I'm about to sell the MBP in my sig and it'll be fairly close to yours.

Is your current MBP a stock 2.8 ?? I'm just wondering how much of an OC you can do and still stay in the heat boundries, as I'm looking at buying a unibody MBP in a few weeks

Nope. It's a first-generation unibody MacBook Pro. That means that I've overclocked the 2.53 GHz C2D (266 MHz FSB) to 2.85 GHz (280 MHz FSB). Since the CPU and GPU share a heatsink, you have to look at what your targeted application is demanding and budget your OC accordingly.

For instance, most XBox ports are shader bound on the MacBook Pro, since both the 8600M GT and 9600M GT only have 32 shader units. Therefore, it usually makes sense to blow the hell out of the shader clock at the expense of all other variables.

By the way, if you're buying a new MacBook Pro, you'll definitely be able to do better than I can on the CPU overclock, since newer MacBook Pros feature the 25W TDP P-series Penryn (versus 35W TDP T-series Penryn).

I see, I'm actually going refurb for my MBP, so the 1st gen unibody is an option that I might get. How easy (if possible) is it to upgrade the newer MBP's HDD and RAM ? I know that it is quite easy in the 1st gen unibodies, but does the built in battery change things in the newer ones?

Sorry, brain fart. You need to set the FSB to 300 MHz to get 2.85 GHz on the first-gen unibody MacBook Pro (9.5x multiplier). :P

Yea, I figured it was a typo. Is EFI OC'ing similar to Bios OC'ing, cuz I have some experience with that on my homebuild. I'm planning on buying my Macbook Pro in a few weeks, since I need to sell my homebuild and the old MBP 1st

Why don't you want to wait for a few months for the newer laptops?

Well I need to sell the laptop in my sig ASAP to get the most resale value for it. If I do buy a refurb MBP and use it for a few months I'm positive that I can sell it for nearly what I paid for it, and then save up a few hundred for bucks to buy the latest MBP with whatever GPU it has.

That said I'm not sure what GPU they are going to use. Nothing new as far as mobile GPU's has come out recently. They might use the GTX 280M, but its name is very misleading - the performance is around that of a 8800 GT. I would like to see the 4870 mobile in a MBP, but its a real shame that ATI's new 5xxx series won't have anything out in the next few months for laptops, and Nvidia's GT 300 stuff is still months away from release :( . I would love to be wrong about this, but unfortunately I can't see the new GPU being to much better then what we have currently

As a rule of thumb, Apple can't ever go for the top of the line mobile GPUs because of the heat they produce and how that would probably melt your face quite badly... The GTX 280M is only named so because its the top mobile GPU in that particular range and of that particular generation. Mobile GPUs are always several steps below desktop GPUs simply because they have to use less power and output less heat.

Going on the TDPs of the parts as seen on wikipedia, the 9600M GT runs at 23 Watts, which equates to the 240M which probably comes out roughly the same in terms of performance... The 250M is only 28W, but since Apple already love to underclock their GPUs, I wouldn't hold out much hope.

Maybe ATI's GPUs are more efficient, but Apple seem to have a good relationship with NV right now, and I don't expect them to bust that up any time soon.

So really, I don't see much coming out of any changes that Apple make in the immediate future. As for the next generation of mobile GPUs, all we can do is hope that both ATI and NV manage to come out with some really competitive but low heat parts.
Polytetrafluoroethylene to my friends.

Macbook Pro - C2D 2.4Ghz / 4Gb RAM / WD Scorpio Black 320GB ( 255GB OSX v 42GB XP ) / Geforce 8600M GT 256Mb / 15.4"
Cube - G4 1.7Ghz 7448 / 1.5Gb RAM / Samsung Spinpoint 250GB / Geforce 6200 256Mb

We won! Apple offer the 17" with a matte screen! Well... at a price...

Yea, I think that the 250M would be a great choice since it only uses an extra 5 watts, but it is faster in most categories by significant amounts
