"games like Escape Velocity"? space trading / combat - recommendations?

I've always been a huge fan of the game series Escape Velocity and was wondering what other similar games there are for Mac. Any recommendations?

EvE Online. I just started and am loving it.
You don't need to fight. You can spend your time hauling, inventing, creating, scavenging or mining.

It's a monthly fee though.

Not quite like Escape Velocity, since in 3D, but otherwise very similar are Oolite and Privateer Gemini Gold. When you think you can stomach the absence of true graphics, I could also recommend Privateer ASCII Sector. All are free.

Pirates! It's obviously not space-themed, but the general gameplay is similar in an abstract sense.

I found Pirates to be extremely superficial, not at all like EV... but that was just me.
