It looks like Sid (or Fixaxis) has updated Colonization (originally released in 1994) using the Civilzation IV engine but with (almost) exactly the original mechanics. I saw a copy in Target and snapped it up. I've played a few hours and it am really enjoying it - it's a little more directed than Civ IV, but there should be a great deal of replayability with different countries to play (along with different terrain, different random colonists, and other events).
Check it out. My current strategy is to concentreate on infrastructure early on (making money, setting up specialized production cities, etc.), and try to crank out the liberty bells (needed to start the revolution) later. Any thoughts on this strategy?

Hmmm... Maybe I should give it a try.. I *really* liked the old one, but the new one hasn't really caught my eye yet..
I'm tinkering with my strategy - it turns out you need Liberty Bells to attract Founding Fathers early in the game. My original strategy was to ignore the Liberty Bells until later in the game when I need them for the Revolution, but now I'll need to start Liberty Bell production earlier. Which means I have to back off on something else.
I guess that's why they call it a strategy game.

So it's been a while, Colonization has hit the bargain bin and I've picked it up.
And it's great for a bit of fun, I'm actually enjoying this a lot more than I did Civ4 itself.
Not amazing longevity perhaps, but fun for a couple of playthroughs (ie for a few dozen hours).
