Hi Guys
I have a source on a mac pro 2.8ghz quad core. This unit has 4gb of ram and a 500gb hd. THe main thing im interested i knowing is the ati 2600xt video card. How good are these cards in relation to the 1600 found on the core duo imacs. I believe i could upgrade this card to the current line of nvida or ati cards as well. The offer is 2100 canadian with 2 more years of applecare on the unit.

So this is the 2008 model? As far as I can remember people have successfully put those new cards in the 2008 Mac Pros.

Wow $2100 CDN is steal for that computer. As long as its the early '08 Mac Pro, which it sounds like it is, you'll be able to upgrade it to any video card, but even if its an older one the 4870 will still work I believe in it. If it is in fact the dual 2.8 GHz quad core CPU, or if you can verify that it has 800 MHz DDR2 RAM, then you'll know that its the early '08 model
As for the 2600 XT, its a noticeably better card the the X1600 XT, see here for benchmarks, but the 4870, and GTX 285 are leaps and bounds ahead of it.
If were you I'd sell the 2600 XT on ebay and then get either the 4870 or GTX 285 depending on how much your willing to spend. The GTX 285 is the best card but its also the most money, and the 4870 could max pretty much every game except crysis so whether or not the GTX 285 is worth it is debatable

Yea, the quad 2.8 GHz Mac Pro's are the early 08 model, meaning that they have the 64 bit EFI so all of the new GPU's are supported
