My internet has always been excruciatingly slow. I begged my dad to spend more and get a faster plan, and he did, but the internet did not improve. I've observed that different rooms in the house are faster and slower. Right next to the router it is extremely fast, but anywhere else, it is similar to dial-up. D: So I need help deciding on a new router that is reliable and has good signal strength. I am currently using a 1701HG Gateway. What would be better?

You're talking about wireless performance, yes? I currently have an awful DLink Wireless-G router and have been browsing around. The new Apple Airport routers with the dual band option seem pretty good. I think it allows newer computers to use the N spec while older ones to still be able to use B/G. I know one thing, I won't touch a DLink router ever again.

You are looking to upgrade the router provided by your ISP? Looking that device up, I see that it is a 2Wire device. I could be wrong, but that appears to be an ISP provided device. If that is true, then there are troubled waters ahead with that particular path.

I had AT&T U-verse, which uses a 2Wire device for their infrastructure device. I ended up telling it to disable its wireless functionality, put one of its ports into the DMZ and connected a Linksys WRT54G to that port. To the Linksys the 2Wire device was little more than a modem. However, you REALLY need to know what you're doing with BOTH pieces of hardware to accomplish this change.

Before I did that, my connection would die all the time as our 4 computers would overload the 2Wire's capacity . .. once I went with the Linksys, my connection was rock solid until I finally canceled my service with them (when I moved out of the state).
