Interesting idea, at least it is less or more than a 50% chance of being right or wrong. That is dependent upon which word you picked.

You could, perhaps, read the definitions for the words and learn which is which.  I know, I know, that's a crazy idea!  Forget I even mentioned it!  You're 18 now; if you learned anything new, you'd probably get thrown in jail.

its simple.
Affect is a contraction of an effect. Its a bit like don't or haven't, you've mashed two words into each other to create an amalgamated meaning.

Affect means to have an effect on something. So you get affected, but it had an effect.

I have looked up the definitions quite a few times, but I am still getting it wrong some of the time.

Think of special effects like a car blowing up that you can watch, but if you stand too close you will be affected.

  • Mr. Jones was knocked for a loop by the heat.

  • The really annoying and aggravating result of the crash was to block traffic the rest of the day.

  • The blood began to drip down the walls and flow over the floor, which didn't help his traction.

A, B, A. But note that you may also effect in certain less-common instances.

Say you were writing for a game, hmm... let's see, StarCraft II MAYBE (or would that be off topic)... you might need to command in writing that the player effect the release of Raynor and Zeratul in one of the single-player missions.

Then again, unless it translates easily to Korean, probably not... YOU FREE JIM might be about the best the player can expect.

Ah, IMG. Where I can go away for a week, and be sure that when I return, no thread will be discussing anything remotely to do with its title. :)

That's pretty much like any conversation in real life.

Hey how about those Dodgers?
.

.
(5 minutes later)

So I said, "No it wasn't the hamster... it was the DUCK!!!"

But yeah, in this case it was pretty much an instant derail.  What am I going to say?  "Everybody shut up that talking you're doing... there!"  I can't bring myself to do that especially when it is such fun banter among friends.

Q - How many Battle Cats does it take to screw in a light bulb?
A - Two.  One to screw in the light bulb and one to shoot all the witnesses.
