I didn't read the whole article but this means that 3D realms shut down and take two still owns the Duke Nukem IP? Am I right or wrong?

I knew Duke Nukem Forever would never be released.
They should've just put the fire trucking game out instead of changing engines and upgrading it 500,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 times. They could've released 4 or 5 Duke Nukems by now. Ridiculous.

When there's a multiplayer version, I'm going to be on Frost's team. Well, except he doesn't seem to actually need a team...I mean, what's the point? "Hey look, it's Frost and His Merry Gang of Useless Hangers-On!" Or something.

The current rumour is that the freshly-undead Apogee is ok, though 3D Realms has kicked the bucket. So the recently announced DN trilogy (i.e., the original side-scrollers) should still be coming out, but DNF now officially stands for "Did Not Finish". This isn't confirmed yet, though hardly surprising if true.
"Cancelled" doesn't quite seem like the right word when it was more or less vapourware in the first place. Maybe someone else will pick it up and run with it, though I personally wouldn't shed any tears if it never saw the light of day.
Destructoid [edit] Looks like that Shacknews article has a bit more detail, with a quote from the 3D Realms webmaster confirming the rumour?

"Deep Silver and Apogee Software are not affected by the situation at 3D Realms. Development on the Duke Nukem Trilogy is continuing as planned."
I wish I gave a popsnizzle about this, but I'm over side scrollers.

well DNF in its current form will probably go to the grave along with 3D Realms, but Take 2 own the rights to it, so could feasibly take the name and have it made elsewhere. Of course, considering the massive money and time sink that it was at 3DR, I imagine itll get shelved for quite some time.
Perhaps a new studio will arise from the ashes of 3DR and carry on work? or at least revisit it a few years down the line.

Or they could just give the project to someone else. You know, someone who actually wants to finish a game instead of releasing trailers every 4 years for 13 years.

The hype alone for this game would make it a huge seller, even if the game sucked something aweful

Man, it would have to have some seriously epic reviews before I would consider shelling out more than $10 for it. It couldn't really duplicate the wow-factor of "ZOMG! Light switches! Toilets!", and the setting is somehow not as fascinating now that I'm not 13 any more.
Still, I'd love to be surprised.
For anyone who hasn't been keeping up, but cares: 3D Realms was since sued by Take 2 for the allegedly many millions of dollars that T2 claims to have sunk into DNF. 3D Realms responded saying they never actually saw that money, that they aren't actually shut down, but that the DNF team has been let go. So uh, yeah. I guess they can move on to other projects to not release. T2 retains the publishing rights to DNF.
