Handbrake will do this now.
After years of only doing DVDs, the team spread their wings and now handle practically any video format you can throw at it.
Polytetrafluoroethylene to my friends.

Macbook Pro - C2D 2.4Ghz / 4Gb RAM / WD Scorpio Black 320GB ( 255GB OSX v 42GB XP ) / Geforce 8600M GT 256Mb / 15.4"
Cube - G4 1.7Ghz 7448 / 1.5Gb RAM / Samsung Spinpoint 250GB / Geforce 6200 256Mb

We won! Apple offer the 17" with a matte screen! Well... at a price...

You can dig up a comprehensive list on the internet. Though it does support most of the major open formats, which means that AVIs should work, but mkv (if you use them) wont.

In Handbrake, just use the PS3 preset, and itll create a compatible MP4 file.

It would also be worth it to take a look at mkv2vob, on PC, which will quickly remux an mkv into a mpeg which will work fine on the PS3. its only the container format which isnt accepted, the H.264 and AC3 audio which youll usually see is supported.

15"MBP@2.4/250/2/256 (This space saving format should be an international standard)
I'm actually TOO good at both TMFPPG and Fable:TLC.
I sleep in a BBEdit T-shirt, but I'm a TextMate user.
