Hello!
In the General section of this forum there is a topic listing many game Web sites. However, the topic doesn't contain information about their popularity :) So my question is: where do you like to play online logic games? Which Web sites would you suggest to a friend and why? And I have another question. I've published a few well-known logic games on my site. Currently, you can only play them online but it is possible to make a local version for each of them. I would like to know which of the logic games you would prefer to download to your computer rather than to run them within a Web browser.
Thank you in advance for any replies.
Best regards

Did you program those games or is this a collection of games you've gathered together? And to answer your questions, I don't think I'd download any of them for local use. If I want to play them, I'd just go to the site. There is no login required and there are no ads that I saw so it's a user friendly place to grab some quick game time.

Some of the games don't work well on a Mac in Safari. 15 Puzzle and Minesweeper to name a couple.

Hello Gary,
Thank you for the response.

Originally, the logic games were programmed under my control by people who were taught Java by me. I promised them to make the best of the games available online. However, there were many drawbacks and inconsistences in design, the games needed to be improved and I had to dig deeply into the internals of each game. It took me about a year to make them more clear to the user and stable enough. So the games you play on my site are products of collective work.

Unfortunately, I could not test the games under Mac as none of my friends use Apple's computer. On a couple of other forums, I already asked Mac users to help me and just check whether the games run in Safari and are displayed properly. Nobody replied by now, so I would really appreciate it if you gave me more details about the problems you encountered. What is wrong with 15 puzzle?
Btw, is there Minesweeper in Mac? I didn't really expect that this game would be played often as it is bundled with every operating system by default.
Thank you again for your feedback.

In Puzzle 15 I am unable to select a section of the picture puzzle to move with my arrow keys. Left clicking does not select, though right clicking does bring up the completed picture in a window. Minesweeper is available to the Mac via 3rd party applications. I've had several different versions of it by various programers over the years. The Java for your Minesweeper will not load in Safari.

No section is selected during the play. It is assumed that you specify the direction in which a piece should be moved by pressing the arrow keys. Since a piece can only go to the empty cell there is no ambiguity which piece is moved by each of the arrow keys. The keys should work if you start the game by selecting New in the Game menu. Please let me know if this doesn't work for you.
Anyway, your confusion makes me think that the game control is not quite intuitive. Apparently, I need to improve it. Moving the pieces with the left mouse button is a good idea.

Hmm... It's an interesting fact. Minesweeper is the only game that is compiled with Java 1.6 as it uses some features of the JDK 1.6. All of the other games are compiled using the previous version - Java 1.5. Either there is some problem with the latest JDK for Mac or you are using an older version of the JRE. Could you please tell me whether you installed the latest Java update?

Thank you very much for your responses. You are the first Mac user that gave me so valuable feedback.

OK, selecting "New" from the "Game" menu allowed me to move the tiles. duh. That was probably my fault, I just assumed the game was ready to play like Gomoku is, but when I went to the 15 puzzle page nothing I tried would move a tile.

I have no idea what version of Java Apple has for the OS10.4.11 PowerPC. What ever it is, that's what I have. The software update program downloaded some sort of Java update recently, though I don't remember the version number.

I see. You were misled by an inconsistency in the games behavior - some of them are ready to play once they are loaded and others require you to select an item from the menu. The games should behave similar to avoid confusions of this kind.

You can see it in a pink rectangle if you load this page: check Java version.

Sorry for the long delay, I somehow missed this reply! I'm using Java v1.5.0_16. Hope I'm not too late.

No problem, Gary. I was sure you had version 1.5. Apparently, you are using Mac OS 10.4 - Java 1.5 is the latest one for this OS. If you had Mac OS 10.5, you would be able to upgrade to Java 1.6.
I will see if it is possible to re-compile Minesweeper with Java 1.5 compiler anyway. Thank you for the follow-up.

Yeah, there are a bunch of us OS10.4ers out here. We are waiting for Snow Leopard to upgrade. Thanks for looking into it.

Well, it wasn't as hard as I thought - I made just a few changes and was able to re-compile Minesweeper with Java 1.5. So, as of today, users of Mac OS 10.4 can play it too. Enjoy! :)
