My Mail has been unable to retrieve messages from my Gmail account for around a month now. I've tried re-installing mail, deleting Mail preferences, neither of which helped. When i look in the activity panel, Mail appears to be retrieving the messages but doesnt actually get anywhere, eventually hanging at a certain number of messages (none of the messages show up in my inbox). If i attempt to stop the operation it will just hang with the "stopping action" message on the activity indicator. I tried deleting all of the messages in my inbox (from googles web based app) to see if there was a particular message causing the problem, but this did nothing to cure the symptoms.
Anyone got any ideas? I'm running Leopard with the latest versions of everything.

Have you checked that the Gmail IMAP settings are still enabled? Log onto the web-based gmail, click settings, go to "Forwarding and POP/IMAP", and make sure you have IMAP or POP enabled.
You might want to try deleting the account from mail.app and adding it, but unchecking the "automatically set up account" box and doing it yourself. That's fixed problems for me before. Google tells you how to do it here.

AMG,
My in-laws had been having a problem with Mail no longer getting their Gmail. I did plenty of I'm-too-smart-for-myself stuff to no avail. Finally, I searched for the error message at Gmail Help and found the solution. So, are you getting any error messages?

No, it just sorta locks up. The activity says its retrieving mail but just gets stuck on a random message. If i try to quit or stop retrieving mail, the app locks up.

Did you check to see if you can download your gmail in a different client? If you can't then perhaps there is a problem at gmail, if you can then you know it's Mail.

Yeah i get that sometimes too archon.
I tried out thunderbird, and it worked. Funnily enough though, it started retreiving sent items and placing them in my inbox. I dont want to use thunderbird though so does anyone have any ideas on how to get mail working?
