Not sure if this is the correct forum as I have been away for a while. Too busy with work for games. Sorry state of affairs I know.

Anyway, have now thrown myself head-long into Eve Online and was hoping to find some like-minded macophiles here. Currently salvaging around in my destroyer getting money and XP together for a cruiser.

Just wanted to hear about the new expansion pack and new graphics for Mac users. Anyone have any experiences?

Its awesome but it requires a lot of patience. The new version has upped the resolution considerably and the game has slowed to a crawl on my MBP 8600. Will muck around with some of the graphics settings but the sensible option is to run it under Bootcamp on my MBP. That Cider translation layer really eats up the CPU cycles.

The 2 weeks free trial is only enough to get a taste for how vast and complex it is and to master the interface.

Still, I thought there'd be more people playing it here.

Anyhoo....this is a great beginners guide for anyone tempted to give her a go. Read the first section about creating a new character as this will help you get setup in the best possible way in terms of skills and race.

I tried to download it last night - But for some reason it stopped at 1.3 GB out of 2.2, and thought it was done.. Now I have to start over.. Meh.

I 'was' playing it... but I got pretty bored of an interactive screensaver from an mmo, and canceled.

It appeals to some, not to others, as with all MMOs. I just couldn't take the lack of true piloting in a space-based game. I'm looking towards Jumpgate Evolution.

I played it for roughly three months extensivly last year. I still think it's the MMO that appeals to me the most because it's sci-fi, has a huge universe (literally) and is so complex that it keeps you occupied for a long time. But that's also one of the great obstacles to the game. The huge complexity makes it very interessting for the experienced player. But for a new player, the learning curve is staggering. But that's not what made me quit playing it. I gave up playing it because there was no story that keept me hooked. And I don't mean the background story of the universe, that one is huge, but the actual missions that are given to you by agents. There is some kinde of story arc, that I've read about in other forums. But it progresses only every 16th odd mission you take. That left me with lots of grinding and boring missions in between. In the end the game felt rather like a job.

I recommend everyone to try it out, though. It's complexity and freedom really stand out in the sea of MMOs that is out there.

I know what u mean about the level grinding. I've just bought my first Cruiser and am earning money to equip it properly. I've been doing some salvaging and lots of missions but am beginning to wonder where to from here. Maybe its time for a proper career. Like a hauler, or maybe industrialist.

.4 space is too dangerous to go salvaging, I get ganked everytime I go in there. Mining is too boring. So as a result I've just been ratting around in the same damn systems all the time.

There's obviously lots to do and maybe its time I found myself a corp and played nicely with others. Seems to be the kind of game that is limited unless you team up with others which is probably the point.

Alas the new version with the up-specced graphics slows my 8600m GFX to a crawl in asteroid belts so it might be time to give up on Cider and move it to my Bootcamp partition.

I have been playing for a little over a month, and have really liked it for the first month. The game is very customizable and I love all the decisions involved in setting up a ship.

However, with it all being PvP and hating the Cider **** hack more and more, I just started taking a break from it and probably will end up quitting since I cant stand Windows and am not going to boot it to play a game.

Yeah not a fan of Cider either. But found some tips on getting better performance with some tweaks. People reporting a doubling in FPS:

There's also a character/training monitor out on the mac now. Early Alpha though...

Yes, I knew about those. Performance wasnt my main complaint, but rather the bugs. You can see in their forums all the comments about the 'Memory Leak'. Whatever it is thou, half the time I run and quit Eve, it leaves the Mac in a state that will keep crashing if you run it again until you REBOOT the computer.

I also have a cool character trainer for my iPhone called iClone, thou it seems to have problems since the apocrypha patch.

hmm, no Edit option to edit previous post.

Edit: iClone seems to be working fine now.

Most of you guys have probably seen this figure, but I'll post it just in case you haven't.

I've been playing for 5 days now. Not much, but I got a feel for things. But I'm not really having that much fun.. Is basically doing the same over and over again? When is the fun part comming in?

Also, what exactly is so fun about being in a guild in the game? What game mecanics are 'changed'.

I would also like to know - How the hell do I get a new ship? O_o I got a million isk right now, that should be enough for some major bad ass death star, right?

You played five days and already have 1 million? Who the hell did you kill?

The fun part presumably comes later when you join corps and fleets and battle for 0.0 space. For now you should be concentrating on training and choosing a career based on your character set up. Third post in this thread has a link to a great beginner's guide that tells you what attributes and race to choose depening on what you want to specialise in.

So have you made a million isk in your first crappy ship? Good effort. I have trained as a salvager and am making around $1million per trip through the .5 asteroid fields. Couldn't cope with the tedium of mining. Running missions is a great way to get your hands dirty in combat and make some good scratch.

You should be able to afford a Frigate now. Just buy the Frigate skill from the market place and train in it and then buy your chosen ride then click on it and choose 'make active' voila, new ship. After Frigate buy a Destroyer or you save up for a Cruiser. You'll need around 1 million skill points to get there though but that doesn't take long now that you can queue your skill training.

No one? O_o I just did ~12 of the the first missions that are available, from the 3 persons introduced by the tutorial trainer?

I was thinking of going the scientific way (Mad scientist in a death star? What can be more cool!), but since the tutorial doesn't help you at all in that direction, I have no idea how to do it. So now I'm thinking of going the fighter --> Pirates --> ? way instead, to get some decent action.

Im currently a Gallente person, having 4 ships, all been given me by completing my first missions. Not major ships, just small improvements on the one you start out with. So now I have a dedicated fighter, and a dedicated miner..

But I will buy a frigate then, thanks!

Hi all.
I am playing EVE 3 months now and am in pretty nice corp/alliance.
If you need any help with your missions or advices or anything related to EVE (not very good on ISK, but can spare some), you can bug me whenever I am online.
My EVE character name is Celioce.

Cheers!

Started a new character - 5 days and 3 million isk. Yay. Im getting better!

Anyways.. I don't like how they put on a block on some skills, just because its a trial version.. Shouldn't they be wanting to draw in the player, and not exclude one?

been playing for 5 days now as well. Lot s of fun. Not to many bugs, i get an occasional crash that has to debug. FPS and such run great on first gen intel i mac with 2gb ram. One annoying thing is i get DC'd alot. I opened the ports on my router but has not helped. It is intermittent and not a huge thing, although today it cost me a destroyer haha. Would recommend it for someone needing a change. DOnt be intimidated by the complexity,in a few days u will get the hang of most things. Awesome newbie help community.
