He downloaded the newest version of the Logitech Control Center and it isnt seeing the mouse. Control Panel installs fine, but when he clicks it, there is just no device there to configure.
Is this is a known issue?
or is there some workaround to get this thing working?
any help wold be appreciated.

Personally I use SteerMouse to attach keyboard combos to mouse buttons, the only downside is that it costs $20 (I think)...
as for trying to get LCC working, if he already has the latest version, you might want to try and track down older versions of the software which may or may not work better. Youll have to do a whole load of hunting across mac forums to find the point where the drivers stopped seeing the devices. Just make sure he completely wipes out every trace of LCC before he embarks. Of course, the older you go, the less likely it is to work in 10.5...
Macbook Pro - C2D 2.4Ghz / 4Gb RAM / WD Scorpio Black 320GB ( 255GB OSX v 42GB XP ) / Geforce 8600M GT 256Mb / 15.4"
Cube - G4 1.7Ghz 7448 / 1.5Gb RAM / Samsung Spinpoint 250GB / Geforce 6200 256Mb
and a beautiful HP LP2475w 24" H-IPS monitor

sounds like its a lot better to just steer him towards another option.

I bought a G5 a few months back (I wanted a corded mouse--no 2.4 Ghz interference) but ended up taking it back to the store. Reason: the G5 has a known firmware bug that makes the mouse inaccurate! Move the cursor in small, dime-sized circles and you'll see if you have the problem. This bug has been patched, but you need the Windows-only control center in order to install the patch! As a Mac user, I had no way to make the mouse work right out of the box.
Your guildmate may be OK, since he may have already patched the mouse's firmware while on the Windows machine. Once fixed, I understand that the mouse is fine on Mac. (But I was not going to ask any of my Windows friends to install some Logitech system software just to fix my mouse. And VMWare didn't help.)

my personal solution is to just not use Logitech products. I currently have to, since my girlfriend lost the ball to my Kensington Expert Mouse when we moved - and ive got an old 4-button Logitech trackball as backup - but the moment i have the spare cash to buy a new ExpertMouse (you believe you cant find a replacement ball for that thing?) its a done deal.

I'd love to have more choice in mice--and my VX Revolution has not been perfect: the first one was defective (wheel didn't work) and the replacement has 2.4 GHz interference problems. (Maybe the first one was on a "lucky channel"--the new mouse is fine sometimes, probably depending on what other channels are being used by other devices at the moment. But I hate having to change channels on my mouse all the time.) I like the shape/size of the VX a lot, but wouldn't mind a cord instead of RF.
Unfortunately, mice with 4-way scrolling and multiple extra buttons are amazingly rare (and that's not a Mac issue). I looked for months, but had no options. It had to be Logitech. (And high-DPI GAMING mice with 4-way scrolling and extra buttons? Doesn't exist--except for that skippy G5!)
The VX seems to be the mouse with the most programmable buttons on the planet (at least from any mainstream company). One more function than the MX, even. And in Quake Wars I use them all! I play QW keyboard-free.
I do like my old Logitech Trackman FX (silver, not white). A giant trackball with whole-hand grip. Next best thing to a mouse or trackpad:

For non-gaming, Apple's 4-button mouse is fine, and I don't even use button 4. Just give me left-click, right-click, and Exposé buttons.

You should try the Expert Mouse from Kensington (its a trackball w/ a big ball and the best scroll-wheel/ring ive ever seen implemented on a trackball), Mouseworks support is great in OSX, and you can program the crap out of it.
